Ajax and Feyenord will play out their abandoned De Klassieker fixture behind-closed-doors on Wednesday, Dutch football authorities have confirmed.

Feyenoord were 3-0 up at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday when the game was abandoned in the 56th minute as home fans threw flares and fireworks on to the pitch.

Both sets of players were led off the field by the referee, but police had to take action when furious Ajax fans tried to storm the stadium after the game had been abandoned.

The match will now be completed at 2pm local time with no fans in attendance.

The Dutch FA (KNVB) have moved Ajax’s scheduled Eredivisie game against Volendam to accomodate the re-arranged fixture.

The 36-time Dutch champions have taken issue with the decision, claiming it will cause fixture congestion issues.

Ajax believe the earliest the Feyenoord match should be resumed is during the first week of November, adding that Volendam’s participation in the KNVB Cup at the end of October will only create further problems.

A club statement read: ‘The competition and cup program is now being adjusted by the KNVB for four clubs due to the completion of an abandoned match. Not only the clubs, but also the supporters are victims of this.’

The KNVB released their own statement saying the abandoned Eredivisie game had to be completed ‘as soon as possible’ to ensure the competition remained fair.

Frustration among Ajax fans boiled over on Sunday after an underwhelming start to the new season.

After missing out on Champions League qualification last season, the Dutch giants have won just one league game so far this term under head coach Maurice Steijn.

The game against Feyenord was paused twice before eventually being suspended when flares and fireworks were thrown from the crowd.

Police then used tear gas to disperse crowds that gathered outside the Johan Cruyff Arena, with videos appearing online that seemed to show some fans attempting to break into the stadium.

Ajax distanced themselves from the behaviour of the fans involved in the disorder, offering ‘heartfelt apologies’ to supporters caught up in the mayhem.

Head coach Steijn called it a ‘jet black day’ for the club.
