Newcastle will rival Liverpool for Mason Mount this summer as Chelsea ponder whether to sell or not.

The England international will see his contract expire at the end of next season and has already turned down multiple offers from Chelsea.

The Blues are desperate to keep hold of the attacking midfielder and will try again to tie him down to a new deal before the end of the season.

However, if an agreement is not reached, Chelsea will look to sell Mount in the summer to avoid losing him for nothing the following year, according to the Daily Mail.

It is further reported that this has alerted the attention of Newcastle, who are prepared to battle Liverpool for the 24-year-old’s signature in the summer.

The Reds had been the favourites to snap up the Chelsea academy graduate in a bid to refresh their midfield.

But Newcastle joining the hunt could spell danger considering the vast amount of wealth on offer at the club under their new Saudi owners.

Eddie Howe wants to bolster his squad and will be given funds with further plots planned for the likes of Kieran Tierney, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans.

The Magpies have already started to flex their financial muscles in recent windows with the likes of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sven Botman costing a total £135million.

Newcastle had been tussling at the top but have started to drift away with a Champions League spot now the ultimate aim for the north-east outfit.

Nevertheless, the progress has been remarkable in a short space of time under Howe and has made them an attractive destination for players, with huge wages on offer a bonus.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus are also interested in Mount, who could be sold to avoid leaving on a free transfer, like Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen last summer.

Chelsea will also be able to count a sale as straight profit because the Englishman came through their academy and did not cost them a penny.

But the Blues still retain hope of keeping hold of the playmaker, who had been tipped to become the club’s next captain.

While it has been a disappointing season for the Portsmouth-born star, Mount has been a key player for Chelsea over the last few years – making 192 appearances over four seasons.
