Fazio was a member of the House Appropriations and Armed Services committees and represented the Sacramento area from 1979 until 1999.

“He was an exceptionally brilliant, energetic legislator, but also someone who cared deeply about individuals whose voices were frequently not heard in Washington,” California Democrat Rep. Doris Matsui said in a statement. “He could talk to a farmer or a mayor of a huge city just as easily.” Vic was a dear friend to my late husband, Bob Matsui, and me for over 30 years. With his decency and capacity to find common ground, he tried to make our country a better place.”

Fazio was born in Massachusetts and came to California as a graduate student, where he served in the State Assembly before being nominated to the House of Representatives.

He was recognised for his support of environmental programmes and his ability to get government financing for projects in his district, such as the Vic Fazio Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, which is located between Davis and Sacramento. President Bill Clinton dedicated it in 1997.

Fazio was also able to work across the aisle with Republicans during a time when Congress appeared to be less polarised.

According to V. John White, a Sacramento legislative staffer who occasionally worked with Fazio, Fazio was a “classic legislator” who worked with Rep. Jerry Lewis, a California Republican on the House Appropriations Committee, to gain federal monies for their state.

He told the Sacramento Bee that “the two of them were the go-to guys… to get stuff for California.”

Of course, Fazio suffered his fair share of criticism and defeats. In 1994, when Republicans seized control of the House for the first time in 40 years, he was chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The next year, he was chosen head of the House Democratic caucus, a position he maintained for four years.

Fazio worked in a public relations business in Washington, D.C. after leaving Congress, and later joined a legal firm until retiring in 2020.
