Explosion at China Restaurant Near Beijing Causes Damage

A devastating explosion occurred at a restaurant in the northern province of Hebei, China, on March 13, 2024, resulting in two fatalities and injuring 26 people. The incident took place in the county of Sanhe, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Beijing, the capital, at around 8 a.m. local time. The explosion was suspected to have been caused by a gas leak in a shop selling fried chicken in the town of Yanjiao. The blast was so powerful that it ripped facades from buildings, damaged cars, and scattered debris, including glass shards and pieces of concrete and metal, throughout the area. Videos shared on social media platforms like Weibo showed a large orange fireball followed by billows of grey smoke, and scenes of the destroyed frontage of buildings and mangled cars, with some objects still ablaze.

Residents and witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion, initially mistaking it for a gunshot, followed by a crash of glass and clouds of smoke. The blast was so intense that it sent a large orange fireball almost as far as buildings on the opposite side of a dual carriageway in front of the eatery. The fire was eventually brought under control, and rescue and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene, including over 150 emergency personnel, 36 vehicles, and various officials.

The explosion occurred near a cultural center in the town and was taking place near the construction of a metro line. In response to the incident, city emergency authorities sent an investigation team, and regional supplier Taida Gas suspended service in several surrounding areas as a precaution to prevent secondary injuries. The company stated it would resume supply after ensuring safety, although it clarified that it did not service the area where the shop was located.

This incident comes after the Chinese government issued detailed guidelines last year on the use of gas appliances and cookers to avert safety risks, following a series of deadly incidents caused by gas leaks in recent years. In June 2023, a gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant in the northwest Ningxia region killed 31 people, prompting regulators to issue guidelines to mitigate such risks.

By Wednesday afternoon, the fire had been put out, and residents living within 500 meters of the site had been evacuated. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges in managing safety risks associated with gas leaks and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to prevent such tragic events.

Investigation Status: Explosion Cause

The investigation into the cause of the explosion at the restaurant in Yanjiao, Hebei Province, China, is ongoing. The explosion, which occurred at a fried chicken shop in Yanjiao township, is suspected to have been caused by a gas leak. Local authorities have dispatched an investigation team to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. The incident has resulted in significant damage, including the destruction of several buildings and vehicles, and has caused injuries to 22 people, with one fatality reported.

The explosion took place at a ground-floor restaurant in a residential area of Sanhe city, Hebei province, east of Beijing. The blast was powerful enough to cause a large fireball, destroying walls and ceilings of the building and sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky. The aftermath of the explosion was captured in footage circulating on social media, showing the extent of the damage.

Authorities have “basically determined” that the explosion was caused by a gas leak, although they have not yet identified the specific cause or location of the blast. The incident underscores the importance of safety measures and regulations in preventing such incidents, especially in areas with a history of gas leaks leading to fatalities.

Rescue operations are ongoing, and emergency crews are working to stabilize the situation. The area has been cordoned off, and temporary traffic restrictions have been implemented to ensure the safety of the public. The incident has highlighted the need for continued vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines to prevent future incidents.
