Harry Kane broke another two records in scoring Bayern Munich’s opening goal against Cologne on Friday night.

The England forward netted his 18th league goal of the season since his mega-money move to Germany from Tottenham in the summer as he extended his lead at the top of the Bundesliga goal scoring charts.

The strike was a gift, and the No 9 may not score an easier goal this season. Former Stoke man Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting did the hard work, forcing a Cologne defender to clear off the line from his effort.

But the clearance only went as far as Kane, who accepted the offer of slotting in from a matter of yards to score once again for Bayern Munich in the only goal of the game as they beat Cologne 1-0.

In doing so he surpassed the records set by both Jadon Sancho and Kevin Keegan in scoring the most goals by an Englishman in the Bundesliga before the season even entered December.

Kane’s goal also meant he became the first ever player to score 18 goals in the first 12 games of a Bundesliga season.

His side struggled to create chances throughout, with manager Thomas Tuchel not making a substitution in the game despite moaning about workload during the international break.

Kingsley Coman hit the bar in the second half and Kane headed wide, but chances came as a premium with Manuel Neuer having to be on red alert at the other end.

Sancho equalled Keegan’s record in the 2019/20 season, perhaps his best campaign as a Borussia Dortmund player before his move to Manchester United in 2021.

Keegan, meanwhile, netted 17 goals in the 1978/79 season while playing for Hamburger SV.

Kane has now surpassed that total, however, with just over a third of the season gone. He could target Robert Lewandowski’s full season record of 41 goals, also achieved while playing for Bayern.

Up next, Bayern will face Copenhagen in the Champions League in midweek having already won their group, before they face Manchester United last.
