Payton Gendron, the 18-year-old white supremacist suspected of killing ten people in upstate New York last month, wrote his parents a handwritten message apologizing but explaining that he had no choice but to carry out the attack.

After opening fire on Black consumers at a Tops Friendly Market on 14 May, Gendron’s bedroom in Conklin, New York, was discovered with the horrific message.

Gendron allegedly drove more than three hours from his residence to a predominately Black neighborhood grocery in Buffalo, according to investigators.

Roberta A. Drury, Margus Morrison, Andre Mackneil, Aaron Salter, Geraldine Talley, Celestine Chaney, Heyward Patterson, Katherine Massey, Pearl Young,  and Ruth Whitfield were all killed. The attack injured Zaire Goodman, Jennifer Warrington, 50, and Christopher Braden.

According to the complaint, after the attack, in which Gendron fired approximately 60 shots, he returned to the front of the store. He was met by members of the Buffalo Police Department, who took him into custody.

Gendron’s motivation for the mass shooting was to prevent Black people from replacing white people. He aimed to eliminate the white race and inspire others to carry out similar attacks.

In the note, Gendron apologized to his family for committing “this attack” but claimed that he “had to commit this attack” because he cares about “the future of the White race.”

The search also turned up a receipt dated 8 March for purchasing a candy bar from the Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York, where the gunman went on a shooting rampage, killing 13 people.

According to prosecutors, handwritten sketches of what appears to be the interior layout of the grocery store were also discovered.

The charges against the White suspect were announced as Attorney General Merrick Garland visited the massacre site and met with victims’ families.
