Several supermarkets have announced they will be shutting this Boxing Day. This will give hard-working employees the chance to spend time with their families over Christmas.

Aldi

Aldi has announced that all stores will be shut on Boxing Day to thank colleagues for their hard work over the year and the festive period.

The supermarket will close its doors on December 25 and December 26, reopening as usual on December 27.

Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi UK, said: “We recognise that Christmas is an important time for many of our colleagues, and keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day gives them more time to spend with their families.

“Customers will have plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas, with more of Aldi’s brand-new Christmas ranges arriving in stores over the next few weeks.”

Lidl

Lidl will be closing on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year. A few stores will potentially remain open however the supermarket has not confirmed which stores these may be.

Home Bargains

Home Bargains announced that all stores will be closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

In a tweet, the retailer wrote: “We would like to thank all our staff for how hard you have worked this past year, and want you to relax and enjoy the Christmas break with your loved ones.”

Poundland

Budget shoppers won’t be able to hit up Poundland on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Simon Wells, people director at Poundland, said: “We really appreciate how hard our colleagues work during the year and closing the stores on these additional days over Christmas and New Year is our way of saying thank you to them – not least because this quarter has been especially busy with new store openings.

“Their efforts are appreciated and we hope they enjoy a well-earned break with family and friends over the festive period.”

Iceland and Waitrose

As for Iceland, the supermarket will also remain shut on Boxing Day. A spokesperson from Waitrose told Express.co.uk that all shops will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with the exception of certain Shell sites.

John Lewis and M&S

John Lewis shops will also remain closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Marks and Spencer will be shut on Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year.

It will be open on Christmas Eve but only until 4pm. However, for late night (and last minute) shoppers, stores will reportedly be open until 10pm on December 23.
