West Brom manager Carlos Corberan was sent off in bizarre circumstances during the club’s clash with Southampton on Friday.

After just five minutes of action at the Hawthorns, a misplaced pass from Saints forward Sekou Mara looked like it may have gone out of play as it travelled down the byline.

With the ball rolling past him, Corberan stepped out of his technical area and touched it with his foot.

The interference drew immediate protests from the Southampton bench as the ball had not been deemed to have gone out of play and referee Sam Allison promptly showed the Spaniard a red card.

Allison’s decision to show the former Huddersfield boss a straight red would prove a contentious one on social media.

One user wrote: ‘Honestly a booking would have done. It’s not like he was gaining an advantage. All the players thought it was out too and had stopped’

Another supporter agreed: ‘Clearly thought the ball had gone out of play. Refs going ott again.’

Others however insisted that Corberan’s interference left the official with no choice but to send him off.

‘Entered the field of play illegally and interfered with play. Red card is the only option.’

Another added: ‘You can say it’s harsh all you want, it’s not referees’ job to teach you all the laws of the game you play/watch!

‘You either want them to do the job right, or ignore the laws of the game. You can’t have both.’

Corberan’s evening would go from bad to worse shortly after his sending off as Ryan Fraser gave the visitors the lead on 14 minutes.

West Brom currently sit fifth in the Championship, 15 points behind Southampton and 26 adrift of runaway leaders Leicester.
