Lawrence B. Russell Jr., a 63-year-old Delta pilot from Fulton County, Georgia, was sentenced to 10 months in jail for showing up for work under the influence, as reported by the New York Times and other sources. Russell was scheduled to fly a Boeing 767 from Edinburgh International Airport to Kennedy International Airport in New York City on June 16, 2023.
However, his luggage was rejected by the X-ray scanner due to the presence of liquid, revealing two bottles of Jägermeister, one of which was opened and “just under half full.” Sheriff Alison Stirling, who sentenced Russell, noted that he had a blood alcohol level of 49 milligrams in 100 milliliters of blood, which is more than two times the aviation limit. The legal limit for pilots in Scotland is 20 milligrams, and in the United States, it is 0.04 blood alcohol concentration.
Russell pleaded guilty to the charges, acknowledging that he had been drinking the previous evening and failed a breath test. His blood test results confirmed his alcohol level was significantly above the legal limit, leading to his arrest and subsequent sentencing. The court acknowledged Russell’s remorse for the inconvenience caused to Delta and its passengers, as well as his history of alcohol use disorder, which was in remission after completing a recovery program in Georgia.
