• NRL veterans could be the face of future US professional league
  • At 35, Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans is at the twilight of his career
  • Roosters fullback James Tedesco is a fan of the lifestyle on offer
  • Las Vegas will host historic NRL double header on Sunday AEDT

NRL stars James Tedesco and Daly Cherry-Evans have both stated they are open to finishing their respective careers in the US – provided a professional league is established.

Sea Eagles owner Scott Penn is among a number of business owners keen to set up an American professional league – and he wants ‘DCE’ – who made his first grade debut in 2011 at Manly where he won a premiership – involved.

Speaking in Las Vegas ahead of the NRL double header this Sunday AEDT featuring Cherry-Evans’ Sea Eagles, Tedesco’s Roosters plus the Broncos and Rabbitohs, the veteran halfback is open to offers.

‘If Scott wants to get it rolling, I’m happy to,’ the 35-year-old said. ‘Obviously I don’t have a heck of time left in my rugby league career.

‘I’m very open-minded about contract stuff and where my career could end up.

‘So we’ll see how we go. But it’s nice to have the owner of our club pushing for an American opportunity. And that’s an easy transition for me.’

While Tedesco at 31 has a few more years up his sleeve than the decorated Sea Eagles skipper, the Roosters leader said the lifestyle on offer in America makes it an appealing prospect.

‘Definitely I am interested. It would be a very cool experience,’ Tedesco said.

‘That’s what the hope is, bringing the game here. You never know, it might spark some interest from around America.

‘So to be able to live in America and play rugby league….I mean, England’s obviously cool as well. But yeah, it’s nice weather here.’

Meanwhile, tickets sales for the NRL double header from 1.30pm AEDT have exceeded the 40,000 mark as anticipation builds for fans.

With increasing advertising and marketing to follow across the gambling mecca, the NRL is hoping to at least 50,000 fans pack into the venue which recently hosted the Super Bowl.

Both footy matches will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 in prime time on a Saturday night, with the potential for over 100 million viewers in the US.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys is also prepared to play the long game, given the NRL has locked in a five-year deal to stage games in Las Vegas.

The footy supremo is also confident ‘once Americans understand the rules, they will embrace and enjoy the greatest game of all.’
