• UK Sport confirmed they want to stage 70 events across the next 15 years

The UK is planning a bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time.

UK Sport, the Government agency responsible for major sporting events, confirmed that the tournament is one of 70 events they want to stage in this country over the next 15 years.

A bid could be made to host the Women’s World Cup – the biggest global sporting event never held here – as soon as 2031.

However, if the 2027 tournament goes to Belgium, Germany and Netherlands – who are up against Brazil and a joint bid from Mexico and the USA – then the UK would target 2035 or 2039 instead. It would be the first senior World Cup hosted on these shores since 1966.

UK Sport’s list of targets also includes the 2027 Tour de France, the World Athletics Championships in 2029 or 2031, the Ryder Cup in 2031 or 2035 and the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2035 or 2039.

‘Live sport is a fundamental part of this country’s social fabric,’ said Simon Morton, UK Sport’s director of events.

‘No other country buys more tickets per head to major sporting events than we do in the UK.

‘In the years ahead, we want to host a programme of live sport that resonates with the British public and makes a difference to millions of people’s lives.’

Stuart Andrew, the Government’s sports minister, added: ‘With the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley in June, and the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2025, we’re building on our world-leading reputation for hosting major sporting events.

‘We are working closely with UK Sport and partners to fulfil our shared ambition to deliver up to 70 major events across 30 different sports to the UK in the years ahead.’

A bid to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup was first muted last year by FA chairwoman Debbie Hewitt, who described it as a ‘very attractive proposition’.

Of all the future events the UK is considering bids for, the 2029 World Athletics Championships is furthest along the road, with a feasibility study currently being carried out.

UK Athletics chief executive Jack Buckner admitted: ‘We’d love to have another crack at 2029 and a World Championships.

‘We first of all have to do a feasibility study and look at what the various options are.

‘We can’t definitely say it’ll be London, but it would be in our mind given the success of it before.’

The Ryder Cup has also not taken place in Britain since it was at Gleneagles in 2014 but it could come back in 2031 or 2035, with the Solheim Cup a possibility for 2030.

England is already hosting the Women’s Rugby World Cup next year, but the UK wants to stage the men’s tournament again in 2035 or 2039, which would be the first time since 2015.
