Fitness queen Kayla Itsines has revealed the one New Years resolution that never works – and her simple advice for setting attainable goals.
The 29-year-old, from Adelaide, explained how it’s far too common to set health and fitness resolutions at the start of the year – but the path to success often becomes cloudy once the demands of everyday life begin to set back in.
‘It’s really common for people to make big resolutions at the start of the year, but often they don’t stick,’ Kayla wrote in her Instagram post.
‘They get forgotten about, life gets in the way, and you feel like it’s all too hard. I’m here to make sure that does not happen to you this time.
‘The reason that many people’s resolutions and goals don’t stick is because they are too vague.’
Interestingly, Kayla said how we phrase our New Year’s resolutions is key to determining whether or not you’ll reach your goals.

Kayla’s top three tips to set a realistic goal
Make it a specific goal: Instead of saying ‘I want to get stronger’, you could say: ‘I want to do three resistance workouts per week, plus a challenge workout, to build my strength’
Make it an achievable goal: If you are totally new to training, set a goal that is realistic to you rather than rushing ahead
Write everything down: Plan out how you’re going to achieve your goal – and this will help keep you on track
Following the birth of her baby daughter Arna, now eight months old, Kayla said she decided to set herself goals such as ‘rebuilding my strength’ and ‘feeling fit again’.
‘What I quickly realised is that these vague goals are really hard to stick to, they are too big – and you don’t even know where to start to achieve them,’ she explained.
So how do you actually set realistic goals?
The CEO of the Sweat empire said you should always set ‘specific’ and ‘achievable’ goals.
‘Instead of saying “I want to get stronger” you could say: “I want to do three resistance workouts per week, plus a challenge workout, to build my strength”,’ she said.
‘If you are totally new to training, set a goal that is realistic to you rather than rushing ahead. If your goal is unattainable or too challenging, you will probably feel disappointed and lose motivation when you don’t achieve it.’
She said one of the best ways to stick to your goals is to write everything down.
‘Actually write down your plan for how you are going to achieve your goal. This will help you to stick to your plan and stay on track to achieve your goal,’ she said.

With 2021 upon us, Kayla said her goals include increasing her lower-body strength and focusing on leg workouts throughout the new year.
‘Leg workouts have always been my least favourite type of training (personal preference), so I’ve always been more focused on arms and abs workouts, or full body ones,’ she explained.
‘But this challenge, I am going to complete one leg workout per week, and do an extra express legs workout once or twice a week too. I will write down exactly when I will be doing them in the planner.
‘I’m so excited to see how much progress I can make.’
