Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has shown his continuing commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community in football.

The England midfielder, who is one of the nominees for ‘Football Ally’ at the LGBT+ Awards in August, has frequently used his social media platform to raise awarness.

Henderson made headlines for his supportive tweet to Liverpool fan Keith Spooner during the Rainbow Laces campaign in December and he has once again used Twitter to communicate with LGBTQ+ fans.

Henderson responded to a tweet from England fan Joe, who said they had been ‘petrified’ of attending the Three Lions’ game against Germany on Tuesday.

However, they said they had been overwhelmed by their positive experience at Wembley.

They wrote: ‘Also this is a really small and personal point but today was my first game at Wembley in full makeup and overtly queer (as opposed to just camp).

‘Absolutely no issues from fans and some lovely chats. Despite being absolutely petrified pre game, really proud of our fans.’

Henderson quote tweeted their original post with a supportive message.

He said: ‘Hi Joe great to hear you enjoyed the game as you should. No one should be afraid to go and support their club or country because football is for everyone no matter what.

‘Thanks for your support, enjoy the rest of the Euros.’

In December, Henderson responded to another tweet from a Liverpool fan, which read: ‘At 17 I came out, I struggled through my teenage years but the one thing that always made me feel at home was Liverpool. Seeing this means the world to me, it truly does!’

Henderson then replied: ‘You’ll never walk alone Keith. If wearing the #RainbowLaces armband helps even just one person then it’s progress. Everyone is welcome at Liverpool Football Club. Hope you enjoyed the game tonight. #YNWA’

Henderson’s Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has also been nominated for the award

Henderson has nominated for the Football Ally award alongside his Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has repeatedly encouraged his players to speak up and advocate for social causes and has also worn rainbow laces.

The Reds’ captain also gave up his social media accounts to a charity raising awareness about the need to tackle online hate.

Hector Bellerin, Conor Coady, Jamie Vardy, Richarlison, Gary Cahill, Graeme Souness and Danny Welbeck have also been shortlisted for the award, which will be presented on August 27.
