A nine-year-old’s game with a heavy metal garage door turned into horrific tragedy when the boy was fatally crushed.

Abdul Razack Tarawaley and a 12-year-old neighbour held onto a garage security gate on Saturday night as it swung upwards and lifted the boys on it at an apartment complex in south west Melbourne.

But as the gate reached the top of its arc the pair were crushed in a small gap between the door and an overhead metal grate.

They were pinned overhead when they were seen by Abdul’s father, who is also called Abdul Razack Tarawaley.

He came out to check on his son just 30 minutes after Abdul went to play with his friends in the ground level car park in Mason Street apartments in the suburb of Altona North.

‘I was thinking they are playing hide-and-seek but when I get there I see blood running out of my son’s mouth,’ Mr Tarawaley told Seven News.

‘Then the other boy was saying “Help me God, Help me God”.

‘I checked the head and I checked the fingers (of Abdul). All is cold.’

The gate was activated by an emergency opening button, which is located next to the door on the inside wall of the apartment complex.

The button may have been pushed by another boy, who was part of a trio of playmates.

Family friend Alvic Jones asked why the door, which was fitted a year ago, had no release to lower it once raised by the emergency button.

‘It should be getting a quick release once it gets a little tension on it,’ Mr Jones said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene just after 7:30pm with paramedics desperately working on Abdul, who sadly could not be saved.

Abdul’s friend was freed and rushed to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The Altona North community has joined with Mr Tarawaley and Abdul’s mother in mourning the much-loved nine-year-old.

Mr Tarawaley described Abdul as a ‘sweet’ boy with dreams of being a doctor.

He said his only child was due to celebrate his tenth birthday in just two weeks time and had loved soccer and playing with friends.

Abdul was a grade four student at the local Newport Primary School.

By Sunday the family had received a flood of tributes for Abdul on Facebook.

‘My heart aches with such sudden news. Finding it so difficult to believe. You’ll forever be in my heart my Ju,’ one person wrote.

‘It is very painful. I’m just in shock, pain and grief,’ another shared.
