20:30 – KDB 8TH, SALAH 7TH!

Of course, de Bruyne helped Manchester City to their third Premier League title in four years.

20:15 – PUTELLAS WINS WOMEN’S BALLON D’OR!

Barcelona Femeni’s Alexia Putellas has won the 2021 Women’s Ballon d’Or following an exceptional season which saw her help her club to the 2020/21 Champions League title!
Jennifer Hermoso finished in second place in the voting with Chelsea’s Sam Kerr rounding off the top three!

20:05 – MBAPPE 9TH, DONNARUMMA 10TH!

Mbappe has been ranked ninth in the Ballon d’Or voting with Gianluigi Donnarumma in 10th. The former has been in excellent form for PSG in Ligue 1 and the Champions League.
Donnarumma found his best form for Italy during Euro 2020 with the goalkeeper awarded the prize for the tournament’s best player!

20:00 – LEWANDOWSKI IS STRIKER OF THE YEAR!

Bayern Munich and Poland striker Lewandowski has won the Striker of the Year award! He enjoyed an excellent 2021, breaking Gerd Muller’s long-standing record for the most Bundesliga goals in a single season!

Spider-man himself, Tom Halland, spoke on the red card ahead of entering the venue!

18:50 – LEWANDOWSKI’S NIGHT?

Most agree Lewandowski would have won the 2020 Ballon d’Or had it not been cancelled, so will the Polish international finally get his hands on the award tonight?

18:45 – EXCITEMENT BUILDING

Lewandowski has just turned up at the venue ahead of the ceremony. Will tonight be the night the Polish striker finally gets his hands on the Ballon d’Or?

18:15 – STARS ARRIVING

The trophies are also on their way to the venue from France Football’s offices!

18:00 – CROWDS GATHERING

The anticipation is building ahead of the ceremony where the winner of the 2021 Ballon d’Or will be announced. This is the scene in Paris right now!

17:55 – HAALAND NEXT UP!

Erling Haaland is 11th in the Ballon d’Or voting. The Norwegian striker has been in exceptional form for Borussia Dortmund, although he failed to fire his country to the 2022 World Cup.
Nonetheless, Haaland is one of the best young players in the game. He will be on this list many times in the coming years…

17:50 – SUITED AND BOOTED!

What Bayern Munich failed to mention is that Lewandowski has been wearing that suit for 12 months…

17:47 – LUKAKU IN 12TH!

We had Martinez earlier in the rankings and now we have Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian was key in firing Inter to the Scudetto title last season and enjoyed a good Euro 2020 campaign.
Lukaku also hit the ground running at Chelsea following his return to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

17:44 – ANOTHER AZZURRI STAR!

If you have Bonucci, you have to have Giorgio Chiellini and sure enough the Italy and Juventus centre back has been ranked in 13th place in the voting.

17:35 – BONUCCI AT 14TH!

Next up is Leonardo Bonucci who has been ranked 14th in the 2021 Ballon d’Or voting. The Juventus defender might have struggled at club level as the Old Lady lost their grip on the Scudetto, but he was instrumental for Italy as they won Euro 2020.

17:30 – TOP 15 TO COME

All that’s left now is for the top 15 to be announced with players now arriving at the ceremony in Paris. The ceremony itself starts in two hours!
Don’t forget, you can watch the live stream of the ceremony this evening on the Eurosport website and app!

17:21 – STERLING RANKED!

Raheem Sterling has been ranked in 15th place in the voting after a stunning Euro 2020 campaign which very nearly saw him fire England to glory.
He might have spent much of last season out of favour for Manchester City, but the winger is still one of the best players in his position.

17:18 – NEYMAR IN 16TH!

It’s not been a good news day for Neymar with the Brazilian expected to miss the next eight weeks of action through injury, but this should make him feel a bit better.

17:05 – HERE’S SUAREZ!

Luis Suarez is ranked in 17th place in the Ballon d’Or voting. The striker was an important figure for Atletico Madrid as they won the La Liga title in Spain for the first time since 2014.

17:00 – KJAER RANKED 18TH!

Denmark and AC Milan defender Simon Kjaer has finished 18th in the voting. He enjoyed a very successful year as Denmark made the semi-finals of Euro 2020, but was also instrumental in the response to Christian Eriksen’s shock collapse against Finland.

16:57 – MOUNT IN THE TOP 20!

Mason Mount has been ranked 19th in the 2021 Ballon d’Or. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that he has finished so highly given the success he enjoyed in 2021.
The attacking midfielder was key for Chelsea as they won the Champions League then starred for England at the Euros.

16:35 – MAHREZ IS 20TH!

Manchester City’s Riyad Mharez is ranked at 20th place in the voting. He had an excellent year for the Etihad Stadium club as they won their third Premier League title in four years.

16:32 – BRUNO AND MARTINEZ OUT NEXT!

Ranked equally at 21st are Bruno Fernandes and Lautaro Martinez. Fernandes was a key figure for a Manchester United team that finished second in the Premier League and made the Europa League final.
Meanwhile, Martinez formed one half of the most lethal strike partnership in the sport as Inter won their first Scudetto for 11 years last season.

16:13 – HERE’S KANE!

Following on from Phil Foden’s appearance at 25th in the voting, here’s Harry Kane as another Englishman. The England skipper might have finished higher had his form not dipped so dramatically this season.
He was a key figure for the Three Lions at Euro 2020, of course, and finished last season as the Premier League’s top scorer.

16:00 – FODEN 25TH, PEDRI 24TH

15:59 – THE STATE OF PLAY

15:55 – MORENO, BARELLA, DIAS TIED FOR 26TH

15:40 – TWO NEW AWARDS!

What those awards are yet we do not know but we will let you know when we find out.

15:38 – MODRIC AND AZPILICUETA TIED FOR 29TH

15:20 – TEN MINUTE WARNING!

The rank order of the Ballon d’Or shortlists gets underway at 15:30 GMT. Not long to go now…

15:10 – THE BARCELONA CONTINGENT HAVE ARRIVED

Plenty of planes are flying into Paris this afternoon containing footballers and their colleagues.
A crew from Barcelona have landed. Alexi Putellas, Sandra Panos, Irene Paredes, Jennifer Hermoso and Lieke Martens are all in contention to win the women’s Ballon d’Or while Pedri is on the men’s shortlist.

14:40 – MOUNT LAUGHS OFF BALLON D’OR CHANCES

During the October international break, Mason Mount laughed off the suggestion he could win the 2021 Ballon d’Or.

Mason Mount laughs off suggestion he could win Ballon d’Or

Mount, who won the Champions League with Chelsea earlier this year, told GQ last week the Ballon d’Or ceremony will be the first time he has ever worn black tie.
“I don’t really get the opportunity to wear many suits,” the 22-year-old England international said.
“I could probably count on one hand how many times I’ve worn a suit in my life. This is all very new to me. The pitch is my natural habitat, and now I have to work out how to do a bow tie. The Ballon d’Or presentation will be the first time I’ve ever worn black tie!”

14:15 – SALAH FOR BALLON D’OR?

Former Spurs assistant manager Gus Poyet has thrown his hat into the Ballon d’Or ring and says Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is ‘the best‘.
Salah has registered an incredible 17 goals and seven assists in 18 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season. But is that enough to win the top individual prize? Poyet believes so.
“Certainly you cannot vote for [Lionel] Messi or [Cristiano] Ronaldo in the Ballon d’Or, perhaps [Kylian] Mbappe or Salah, but the latter certainly is the best,” Poyet told Al-Hayah TV.
“His influence in matches is better than Messi, Ronaldo and Mbappe, even if he does not score.”

13:00 – WHICH ENGLISHMAN WILL NEXT WIN THE BALLON D’OR?

It’s been 16 years since an Englishman last won the Ballon d’Or (Michael Owen in 2001), so who could be the next player from the country to win the prize?

12:35 – RONALDO ‘NOT TRAVELLING TO PARIS’

Reports are circulating in Portugal this lunchtime that Cristiano Ronaldo, who is on the 30-man shortlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or, will not be making the trip to Paris for the awards ceremony tonight.

12:15 – GUARDIOLA: RONALDO, MESSI FEATS ‘ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO IMITATE’

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola does not believe two players will ever dominate the Ballon d’Or in tandem as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have done.
Both players are nominated to win the prize again this year with Messi the frontrunner to win the award for a record seventh time.
Guardiola, who managed Messi at Barcelona, doubts anyone will come close to the pair’s achievements in the game in the future.
“I don’t imagine [it will happen]. What these two guys have done, it will be almost impossible to imitate,” he said.
“Maybe I will see it but I don’t think it’s going to happen – scoring this amount of goals, the amount of titles both had done. It is so difficult. I think it is unique in history to find two players like Cristiano and Messi do what they have done.”

11:50 – PEDRI EN ROUTE

Perhaps one of the more surprising names on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or is Barcelona midfielder Pedri.
The 19-year-old has been a regular in Barca’s midfield this calendar year and was a starter for Spain at Euro 2020 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He is widely regarded as one of the most promising midfielders in world football.

11:30 – ‘BENZEMA TO COME UP SHORT’

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is set to miss out on the Ballon d’Or with Lionel Messi on course to win his seventh title, according to Marca.
The France international has scored 30 goals and provided nine assists in 46 matches for Real Madrid and his club form saw him recalled to the national team, but that will reportedly not be enough to see him win the award tonight.
Benzema has been backed by Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane and tennis legend Rafael Nadal to scoop up the prize and said earlier this month he was happy to be in contention.
“The Ballon d’Or? We’ll see what happens… but I hope so,” he told reporters.
“I’m happy to be involved, to feature and score in the games. I’m so happy and I hope this can continue. In any case, the World Cup should be one of our targets given the team we have.
“We have to prepare well to reach our goals and the World Cup is one of them, for sure.”

11:10 – PARKER: LEWANDOWSKI LEADS THE WAY

Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich, new Paris Saint-Germain signing Lionel Messi, and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema are the three favourites for this year’s Ballon d’Or award.
Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker is looking towards the Polish star as the favourite, but thinks this could be the last chance of success for some veterans.

10:50 – WOMEN’S BALLON D’OR: TOP 10 CONTENDERS

After the exceptional seasons enjoyed by Chelsea and Barcelona, who look set to dominate women’s football for the coming years, and Paris Saint-Germain’s first-ever domestic league win, there are no shortage of eligible contenders for the women’s 2021 Ballon d’Or.
Eurosport takes a look at the top 10 contenders for the 2021 women’s Ballon d’Or award

10:30 – THE TIMINGS THIS EVENING

The gala event takes place tonight with players arriving on the red carpet in Paris from 5.50pm GMT. Live coverage of the ceremony runs from 7.30pm to 9pm GMT.
As well as the two main Ballon d’Or awards, the Kopa Trophy will also be presented to the best player under the age of 21 and the Yachine Trophy will go to the best goalkeeper.

10:00 – GUNDOGAN: ‘DEDICATED’ LEWANDOWSKI DESERVES BALLON D’OR

Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan has tipped his former Borussia Dortmund team-mate Robert Lewandowski to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.
“I think I would go with Lewandowski, to be honest,” he told Punditarena. “I played with him in Dortmund so I kind of know directly how great a player he is, how dedicated he is, also, to his work.
“The fact that last year there was no Ballon d’Or winner and he probably would have deserved it last year.”

09:40 – PIRES SAYS ‘SIMPLY THE BEST’ LEWANDOWSKI SHOULD WIN AWARD

Legendary Arsenal and Villarreal winger Robert Pires thinks Robert Lewandowski deserves to win the Ballon d’Or and says he is “simply the best”.
“I very much hope that Robert Lewandowski receives this honour,” Pires told Sportbuzzer.
“In terms of the overall package as well as the development and accuracy, Lewandowski is simply the best.
“If he had played in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain last season and hadn’t been injured, then Munich would not only have reached the semi-finals, but they might have defended their title.”

09:20 – MOUNT: NOMINATION HAS BLOWN MY MIND

Mason Mount has said it has “blown my mind” to be named on the 30-man shortlist for the men’s Ballon d’Or.
“To be involved in something like this and to be selected to be in a category of 30 players of such standing is such a special achievement,” Mount told GQ.
“I set goals and I want to achieve big things, but I didn’t ever think this would happen after two or three seasons. It’s blown my mind.
“To see my name alongside the names I’ve looked up to all my life is crazy, Messi in particular. When I was younger I was a ball boy during a Barcelona and Chelsea match at Stamford Bridge, and seeing him up close was amazing.”

09:05 – HOW DOES JORGINHO COMPARE TO PREVIOUS WINNERS?

Jorginho is among the frontrunners to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or after helping Italy to Euro 2020 glory and Chelsea to the Champions League title. But how does the midfielder’s candidacy this year compare to previous Ballon d’Or winners and candidates who have been pushed forward after a major tournament year?
Check out Graham Ruthven’s analysis here

08:35 – RAMOS: I WISH MESSI ALL THE LUCK

With Messi seeking to win a record seventh Ballon d’Or title, his former rival-turned-team-mate Sergio Ramos has backed the Argentine to pick up the award.
“Yes, of course [I hope he wins],” Ramos told ESPN. “I’m going to defend the guys in my team. I wish him all the luck in the world.
“He’s in good shape, and I think he’s the kind of player who really makes a difference. He’s a unique player and it’s a privilege to have him in the team.
“I think that bit by bit, each of us is going to bring our own quality to make Paris Saint-Germain even greater and achieve the things we want to achieve.”
Ramos made his long-awaited Paris Saint-Germain debut in Ligue 1 alongside Messi in their 3-1 win over Saint-Etienne on Sunday.
