In Omagh near Killyclogher Road sports complex, Detective Inspector John Caldwell, a senior police officer, was shot in front of his son.

He was coaching an under-15 football team with his young son when the gunmen appeared and fired multiple shots.

John has led some of the most high-profile investigations of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Detective Chief Inspector Caldwell’s resilience and commitment were praised by Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan.

The investigation into the shooting is primarily focused on the New IRA, a dissident republican group.

Three Suspects Were Arrested For Shooting John Caldwell

In Omagh, County Tyrone, an off-duty police officer, Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell, was the victim of an attempted murder on Wednesday.

Police have arrested three suspects; however, no further information about the gunmen has been released.

On Wednesday at 8 pm, two gunmen shot Mr. Caldwell while he was loading footballs into his car with his son.

The senior officer attempted to escape but fell to the ground, and the gunmen continued to shoot him.

Irish police are assisting in the investigation of the gunmen who fled across the border.

Deputy Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan called the attack “callous” because it occurred in front of multiple parents and children.

Many young people ran in terror to safety after the attack occurred in a crowded area, demonstrating the brutality and heartlessness of the attackers.

Three arrested as PSNI officer ‘fights for his life’ after Omagh shooting

Three men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh last night.

The senior PSNI officer was shot and seriously injured in front of his young son after an under-15 football session at a sports complex on the Killyclogher Road.

The injured officer remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after surgery on his wounds.

The men arrested are aged 38, 45 and 47 and were detained in Omagh and Coalisland. They are being questioned at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.

Det Chief Inspector Caldwell is a senior policeman who has been involved in some high-profile investigations recently, including the death of Natalie McNally in Lurgan.

He was putting footballs into the boot of his car when two gunmen approached and opened fire.

The off-duty officer was hit several times in the torso as he tried to get away and was shot after he fell to the ground.

The PSNI praised a “brave” member of the public who came to his aid as the attack was taking place.

The gunmen escaped in a small black car, which was found burnt out a short time later.

The PSNI said the primary focus of the investigation was on dissident republicans, in particular the New IRA.

PSNI Chief Constable Simon Byrne told reporters this morning that Det Chief Inspector Caldwell is “held in the highest esteem” and “a valued and active member of his local community”.

He said that the thoughts of his colleagues are with him and his family as he “fights for his life in hospital today”.

Mr Byrne said it is “tragic and sad that there are some that wish to drag us back to the past”.
