A man has drowned in the lake outside SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the second death to occur in the man-made water feature since the venue opened in 2020.

The man, reportedly in his early 20s, entered the lake at around 9:30pm on Friday night and didn’t resurface.

According to the Los Angeles Times, a dive team was deployed to the home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers and they immediately began a rescue effort.

The man was found just before 11pm and the dive team attempted CPR but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

It is the second time since the $5billion stadium opened in 2020 that somebody has died in the 15-foot-deep lake that sits outside the venue.

‘It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of an individual last evening,’ read a statement from SoFi Stadium.

‘Our deepest condolences go out to the individual’s family and friends for their loss. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.’

Electronic musician Illenium was performing at the stadium on Friday night. The show ended at around 11pm.

Back in July 2022, a 45-year-old man died after jumping into the lake.

Security spotted him jumping over a fence at the perimeter of the stadium’s car park before diving into the lake.

Divers were called to the scene and recovered the man’s body three hours later.

The lake spans six acres, holds nearly 11 million gallons of water and features a number of waterfalls. It is meant to be an aesthetic greeting for fans as they arrive at the stadium.
