Premier League clubs collectively smashed the gross spending record for a single transfer window in one league this summer, with over £2.4billion splashed out.

The market slammed shut late last night after a host of sides scrambled to complete their last-gasp business, including several dramatic big-money swoops.

As is now tradition, deal sheets had been submitted for a handful of these transfers, allowing Nottingham Forest in particular to invest heavily even after the deadline.

By 10.30pm on the final day of activity, the top-flight’s overall spending had risen from £2.2bn gross to more than £2.3bn, largely due to the flurry of last-gasp moves.

And after the switches completed in ‘deal sheet time’ were added to the staggering overall amount, it can be revealed that even the £2.4bn milestone was beaten.

Half of the division spent £100m+ gross in the window, while just four teams finished with an outlay of less than £50m, including newcomers Sheffield United and Luton.

Chelsea topped the spending stakes this summer after pumping £428.8m into their squad. That, of course, came as no surprise in light of the arrival of Moises Caicedo.

Midfielder Caicedo was signed from Brighton for a British record fee of £115m, with the move eclipsing the club’s previous record of £106.8m for Enzo Fernandez.

The spending at Stamford Bridge continued with an array of transfers that gradually ratcheted up the eye-watering final amount. Romeo Lavia, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Axel Disasi and Nicolas Jackson were among the biggest movers.

This lavish spree was offset, however, by some key departures. Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and Kalidou Koulibably all left this summer for reasonable figures, while they were joined by Christian Pulisic, Edouard Mendy and others.

Surprising, Tottenham were second in the spending rankings after the typically frugal Daniel Levy opened up his cheque book to the cool tune of £213.4m.

Brennan Johnson joined for £47.5m with Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Pedro Porro, Dejan Kulusevski and Guglielmo Vicario the other notable additions.

Their net spend stood at £103.4m, though, after Bayern Munich snapped up talisman Harry Kane for £100m at the end of a lengthy saga, despite Levy’s reluctance.

Manchester City spent the third-highest amount of the summer. While not as active as Chelsea, they brashly reinforced the spine of their side, with Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku all arriving in a £211m splurge.

Arsenal finished fourth after spending £206.5m, meanwhile. Their big-money pursuits of Declan Rice, who joined for £105m, and Kai Havertz tipped the scales here, despite Folarin Balogun and Granit Xhaka being shown the exit door.

Manchester United and Liverpool occupied fifth and sixth respectively, while Newcastle, backed by the riches of Saudi Arabia, secured seventh spot.

Surprisingly, West Ham, Bournemouth and Forest rounded off the top 10 biggest spenders in the league as they bid to create shockwaves again this season.

Only four clubs saw their spending come in under the £50m mark.

Sheffield United recorded an outlay of £41.8m, with Everton putting just £40m toward their survival bid. Behind them were Crystal Palace and Luton.

Incredibly, underdogs Luton, who are joint-bottom of the top-flight, spent £20m.
