The San Francisco Giants formally interviewed assistant coach Alyssa Nakken as they search for a new manager, according to reports.

Nakken is thought to be the first woman to be a serious contender for an Major League Baseball team’s top uniformed job, The Athletic claim.

The 33-year-old already made history in 2020 when she became the first female appointed to an MLB coaching staff. She was one of 13 coaches assembled when former manager Gabe Kapler was hired.

Bench coach Kai Correa and third base coach Mark Hallberg were also said to be among the in-house candidates to replace Kapler, who was let go in September.

Nakken has spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach in San Francisco, with a focus on baserunning, outfield instruction, and in-game preparation.

She was also credited with being a critical part of the Giants’ franchise-record 107 wins in 2021, when she served as a dugout liaison to pinch hitters.

On April 12, 2022, Nakken became the first woman to coach on the field in an MLB game when she filled in as the first base coach.

The 33-year-old was an all-conference softball player while at Sacramento State before she joined the Giants as a baseball operations intern in 2014.

Nakken previously expressed interest in eventually taking on a management role following her first season back in 2020 when she said: ‘Manager and/or bench coach positions are two that my interests gravitate towards at this point in time.’
