Finally, a breakthrough. Tottenham Hotspur have accepted an offer worth over £95million from Bayern Munich for their star striker Harry Kane.

Now, after mulling over the pros and cons for weeks since Bayern’s interest in him became concrete, Kane needs to make a final decision.

The dramatic development, following weeks of back and forth between the two clubs, comes just three days before Spurs begin their Premier League campaign against Brentford.

Kane, 30, is entering the final year of his contract and this summer represents the final chance for Spurs to recoup what they believe is a worthy sum for the prolific England captain.

The striker has always maintained he wanted the situation concluded ahead of the new season but won’t commit to a new deal with the club he has represented since the age of 11.

As Kane makes his mind up, we analyse the arguments for staying at Tottenham and for joining Bayern.

THE CASE FOR STAYING AT TOTTENHAM

Kane’s loyalty to Tottenham, the club he has scored 280 times for in 435 matches, was apparent in his desire to settle his future before the start of the season.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football, launching with a preview show today and every week this season.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube , Apple Music and Spotify

He didn’t wish to cause unnecessary disruption to new coach Ange Postecoglou’s plans for the new campaign and is said to be enjoying the pre-season training sessions under the Australian.

There is fresh optimism around the club after a strained 2022-23 campaign, mainly under Antonio Conte, in which they managed a hugely disappointing 8th-place finish in the Premier League and fell short in the cups.

The signings of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and others are providing confidence that Spurs will enjoy a better campaign, aided by a lighter schedule in the absence of European competition.

Kane, who still managed to score 32 times despite last season’s turbulence, would be prepared to give everything in the knowledge it is likely to be his final season in north London.

He would also wish to get plenty of goals under his belt ahead of next summer’s Euros with England, who rank among the tournament favourites, and leave on the right note with the fans.

Kane could also continue to chip away at Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record – Shearer racked up 260 and Kane is currently 47 behind on 213.

The four goals he scored in last Sunday’s friendly win over Shakhtar Donetsk showed a player revved up and raring to go for the new campaign.

He would be aided by indications that Postecoglou will adopt a more attacking approach than Conte did.

Kane's final season at Spurs would be spent without any European football

Kane’s final season at Spurs would be spent without any European football

If Kane scored over 30 times under the Italian, you’d back him to at least match that in a side committed to pushing forwards.

The prospect of Kane being available on a free would also offer him the luxury of choice next summer.

If Real Madrid don’t sign Kylian Mbappe, for example, they would surely be interested in Kane. Likewise, Paris Saint-Germain and any number of Premier League clubs, including potentially Manchester United, who were linked this summer.

A personal factor for not moving is that Kane’s wife Kate is pregnant with their fourth child, due in the coming months, and he may wish to stay in London rather than move to Germany right now.

THE CASE FOR JOINING BAYERN MUNICH

Kane is clearly seriously interested in joining the German champions, otherwise we wouldn’t have reached such an advanced point.

Bayern are also clearly huge admirers of the England star, having pushed the financial boat out considerably beyond their usual limits and made four bids.

There’s no question Kane would be a poster boy for the club and central to Thomas Tuchel’s plans for not just the coming season but many to come.

That’s reflected in the £400,000-a-week salary the German giants are offering Kane – more than double what he currently earns. Moving to Bayern would bring a substantial financial boost.

Bayern haven’t adequately replaced Robert Lewandowski but Kane would fit the bill. The whole team and the manner of playing would be geared towards him.

Committed to playing attacking football, Kane would receive an abundance of service

In the vast majority of games they play, Bayern are the dominant side and on the front-foot. Kane would get plenty of service and rack up at least as many goals as he scores now at Spurs.

The difference is, however, that those goals would translate into trophies. Lots of trophies.

Kane has made no secret of his desire to lift football’s biggest prizes and, despite all his endeavours and a few near-misses, he hasn’t been able to accomplish that at Spurs.

Bayern is about as close to a guarantee of winning silverware as it’s possible to have in club football. They have won the Bundesliga for the past 11 years.

Even last season, a rocky one which saw Tuchel replaced Julian Nagelsmann in March, they still won the title on goal difference after rivals Borussia Dortmund blew it on the final day.

Kane would also get to play in the Champions League again, a stage he will feel he belongs in the prime of his career. Spurs didn’t even make the Europa Conference League this season.

Indeed, Bayern would expect Kane to power them to glory in Europe’s top competition, a mission he would gladly accept.

There would also, fundamentally, be the freshness of a new challenge, the opportunity to test himself in a different country and different league.

He wouldn’t struggle to settle in, either, with English widely spoken in the dressing room and the city of Munich as a whole.

The Mirror reported that Bayern have already found Kane and his family a luxury mansion in the millionaire’s enclave of Grunwald, on the outskirts of the city, to help him settle quickly.

His wife Kate has also reportedly been scouting homes in and around Munich in anticipation of the move going through.

It isn’t as if any Spurs fan would begrudge Kane the move either after all he has given the club over the past decade.

Still only 30, there would also be nothing stopping him returning to the Premier League in a few years’ time to break Shearer’s record, assuming he remains fit.

All Bayern need now is a ‘yes’.
