• Simon Jordan took issue with Gary Neville labelling Chelsea as ‘bottle jobs’
  • He claimed the Sky Sports pundit ‘must have been practising that line all week’
  • Chelsea were gutless to play for penalties. Liverpool have a cause, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are soulless – Listen to the It’s All Kicking Off podcast

Simon Jones has taken aim at Gary Neville and his ‘little Overlap gang’ after the pundit labelling Chelsea as ‘billion pound bottle jobs’ following their Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool.

The Blues suffered heartache at Wembley as Virgil van Dijk’s header in extra time sealed a 1-0 win for Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Chelsea guilty of a handful of big misses against an injury-hit Liverpool who had brought on a number of yougsters.

After the game, Sky Sports pundit Neville was scathing on commentary duty, saying he had no sympathy for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as he goaded the west Londoners for falling short despite spending over £1bn since Todd Boehly’s takeover in 2022.

Liverpool managed to grind out the narrow result despite also turning to youngsters as late substitutes – Bobby Clark, Jarrell Quansah, James McConnell and Jayden Danns.

Neville said: ‘It’s Klopp’s kids against the blue billion pound bottlejobs. For Chelsea I’ve got no sympathy whatsoever.’

Mail Sport columnist Jordan, speaking on talkSport, took a swipe at Neville – as well as the pundits who feature on his Stick to Football podcast, produced by his YouTube channel The Overlap, suggesting he had been waiting ‘all week’ to say it.

‘Neville must have been practicing that line all week with his little Overlap gang and being quite pleased with himself to get it out on air,’ said Jordan.

‘Calling a team bottlejobs, you are effectively calling them cowards.’

Neville’s stern criticism was slammed as ‘unfair’ by fellow pundit Ally McCoist, while Gary Lineker called the statement ‘very strong’.

Chelsea boss Pochettino has also responded, but his retort was more lukewarm as he insisted he was ‘proud of his players’, adding: ‘He (Neville) knows the dynamics are completely different. I think it’s not fair to talk in this way, if he said that.’

But Jordan took issue with Pochettino’s response saying he expected a ‘stronger’ reply from the Argentine after his players were questioned in such a way.

‘I would expect a manager, he doesn’t have to dance to anybody’s tune, but I expect a little bit of bristle,’ Jordan went on.

‘Maybe something was lost in translation and that is just the nature of the beast but I personally would like to see my manager be a bit more robust with that observation and a little bit more prickly about the sentiments of my team.

‘I take this as a reason why I don’t see him winning very much with Chelsea despite my protestation that they’d win something over the next three years.

‘Not with Pochettino, I don’t think. I always thought he would get them close and up the pyramid or up the table certainly.’
