•  AFL captains reveal what they’d do if they ran the AFL
  •  Zach Merrett says he’d make footy like it was in the 90s
  •  Patrick Cripps would have the AFL decider at twilight

AFL skippers have spoken out about what they’d change if they were in charge of the league for a day – and some of their answers are sure to leave footy fans either delighted or outraged.

With the footy season just over a week away, SEN asked several the competition’s captains what they’d do if they replaced CEO Andrew Dillon.

Essendon’s Zach Merrett spoke for a lot of older fans when he said he’d like to get back to 1990s footy.

‘My way to do that is to play 16 versus 16, get rid of rotations, get rid of some players off the field and make it one versus one,’ he said.

‘Less coaching, less pre-season and more games. Give the fans more of what they want.’

Magpies star Darcy Moore would tackle player fashion first if he was AFL CEO for a day

Collingwood’s Darcy Moore brought up a sore point that a lot of players have talked about in recent years.

‘I would get rid of media polos so you wouldn’t have to wear ugly polo shirts with stickers all over them so players can wear casual clothes to and from games,’ said Moore.

Footy stars got the chance to show off their taste in clothing in 2019 when the ill-fated, nine-a-side AFLX games were held in the preseason – and players such as Patrick Dangerfield are pushing for the right to do it more often.

Melbourne’s Max Gawn said he’d like to make the ruck a ‘free-for-all’ with no free kicks for rough play – before joking that he’s not the best person to ask.

‘Actually I’d do not much. I’m not the right guy for AFL CEO,’ he said.

Carlton’s Patrick Cripps weighed in on the ongoing debate over whether the premiership decider should stay in its traditional 2:30pm AEST timeslot or have a later kickoff, as pushed by Eddie McGuire.

‘I don’t mind the grand final being a twilight [game],’ he said.

‘It might be a bit controversial, but I think that would be the best time for it.’

Both Port Adelaide’s Connor Rozee and Fremantle’s Alex Pearce agreed that paying the players more would be a good move.

Brisbane’s Harris Andrew and West Coast’s Oscar Allen thought that play should continue if the ball bounces back in off the post.
