  • Was asked where he was from in Tonga – Smith’s response was very cheeky

NRL cult hero Brandon Smith has been up to his old tricks yet again, sending a crowd into hysterics with a cheeky one-liner about his anatomy.

The dummy-half nicknamed ‘Hectic Cheese’ was told, ‘Everyone wants to your name and where you are from in Tonga,’ as he was interviewed at a ceremony in New Zealand on Wednesday.

Smith, 26, who was born on Waiheke Island and boasts Maori and Norwegian descent, joked he was ‘Tongan from the waist down’.

The crowd lapped up Smith’s tongue-in-cheek response at the function to promote New Zealand and Tonga’s clash this Saturday at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.

It promises to be an electric atmosphere as the country hosts a top-flight rugby league game for the first time since the Warriors played at the venue in late August 2019.

The Covid pandemic saw the Warriors selflessly base themselves in Australia to ensure the NRL competition could continue.

Smith, one of the premier hookers in rugby league, is a fan favourite due to his larrikin nature.

Be it pretending to ‘mount’ Craig Bellamy at Melbourne training, or adding a number of rocks to his coaches’ travel bag before hopping on a team bus, there is rarely a dull moment when Smith is in the mood to entertain.

He even once snatched a lollipop out of a young child’s hand – with it later emerging the kid was Bellamy’s grandson.

Having long expressed his desire to start matches rather than be an impact player off the bench at NRL level, Smith will join the Sydney Roosters next season on a three-year deal.

After making his NRL debut in 2017, Smith won a premiership with the Storm in 2020.

He missed Melbourne’s NRL season opener this year due to suspension and was also fined $15,000 by the NRL after the club’s now infamous ‘white powder’ scandal last September.

Smith was also slapped with a suspended $50,000 fine by the Storm and stood down from the club’s Emerging Leadership group following the incident.
