Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a troublesome hamstring injury at the weekend in a huge blow to Graham Potter’s side.

The 20-year-old, who was a star performer for the Seagulls in the opening months of the season, picked up the injury against Fulham on December 16 and has not featured since.

He went under the knife in London on Saturday to fix a tear in the tendon and though he could return to training before the season is out, he will not be fit enough to feature according to The Athletic, as Brighton look to stay in the Premier League in their 11 remaining games.

The report details that the surgery was successful over the weekend, but Potter will have to cope without the right back for the remainder of this campaign.

Lamptey, who was bought from Chelsea in January 2020, signed a new contract until the summer of 2025 two months ago as a result of his excellent early-season form.

But Potter, who is trying to keep Brighton in the Premier League as they hover perilously close to the relegation-zone, admitted last week that he was concerned he’d be without Lamptey for the season’s remainder.

‘In terms of time, there’s not that much time left of the season, depending on the state of the injury – at the moment we’re not quite sure,’ Lamptey said.

‘We need to get to the bottom of it because clearly at the moment we’re not quite there with that and it’s frustrating for him and it’s frustrating for us.

‘But we will and he’ll come back stronger and he’ll be better for the experience. We’ve got to look at it that way, try to be as positive as we can.

‘But clearly there’s a concern and a frustration, because he’s not available for us at the moment, and I feel for Tariq.’

Having lost three games in a row following another chastening loss against Leicester on Saturday, Brighton are now level on points with Fulham in 18th after their 1-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday – the Seagulls face Southampton next weekend.
