Diamondbacks rookie Corbin Carroll, 22, ‘agrees to $111million, eight-year deal’ to become the youngest drafted player EVER to get a nine-figure contact… after just 32 MLB games

The Arizona Diamondbacks are all in on Corbin Carroll.

The 22-year-old outfielder and FanDuel Sportsbook favorite to win the 2023 National League Rookie of the year has agreed to an eight-year, $111 million deal with the club that could be worth as much as $154 million with bonuses and a club option for 2031, according to multiple reports.

The Diamondbacks have confirmed the length of the deal, but not the specific compensation.

Remarkably, Carroll is the youngest drafted player ever to sign a nine-figure deal, according to The Athletic’s Zach Buchanan.

The left-handed hitting Carroll played well as a September callup in 2022, hitting .260 with a respectable on-base percentage, .330, and slugging percentage, .500.

The Diamondbacks were apparently encouraged enough to lock in the former first-round pick at an average annual salary of $17.1 million – a considerable amount for a player with 32 career Major League games.

‘If Carroll is as good as the Diamondbacks (and many others) believe he will be $17.1 million a year will be a steal,’ Buchanan tweeted. ‘But that’s how these early-career deals work. The player gets a hefty payday and security, and the team gets cost certainty.’

The Seattle native is known for his speed, stealing 31 bases in the minors in 2022 while being caught only five times.

In fact, over three seasons in the minors, Carroll has swiped 52 bags while being caught just seven times.

Most importantly, he showed he can handled Triple-A pitching in 2022, batting .287 with an impressive .408 OBP and .535 slugging percentage.

The contract is similar to the eight-year, $100 million deal signed by Atlanta Braves star outfielder Ronald Acuna in 2019 – a pact that could be worth as up to $124 million if the club exercises options in 2027 and 2028.

Acuna was just 21 at the time of the contract, which may well turn out to be a bargain for Atlanta depending on whether the native Colombian can overcome his recent injury issues.

Still, Acuna had already won National League Rookie of the Year in 2018 by the time he signed his nine-figure deal the following season.

Carroll, on the other hand, has no such track record.

Fortunately for Diamondbacks fans, Carroll has looked strong this spring, hitting .318 and getting on base at a .483 clip over 29 plate appearances entering Monday.
