Jurgen Klopp admits that Liverpool ‘have to strengthen’, but is doubtful that they’re in a position to make any further moves this month.

The Reds are enduring a difficult season as they sit in ninth position in the Premier League table having won just eight of their 18 league matches.

Their latest outing saw them fall to a dismal 3-0 defeat to Brighton at the weekend, a scoreline which has left supporters feeling anxious about the second half of the season.

Liverpool have already completed a deal to bring in Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, but Klopp admits that it seems unlikely that they’ll be able to bring in any other fresh faces before the end of January, with the Reds likely to focus on getting more from their existing group instead.

Speaking to the media, Klopp said: “It must be a language issue, it must be that you ask these questions again and again because I answered already so often.

“We look outside as well. It’s not that we’re stubborn and think we’ll go with these boys until 2050.

“If solutions for us were outside and doable of course we would bring in players to help but we have an existing squad as well and we’re definitely under-performing.

“But I cannot sit here and blame everything else. It’s my responsibility that they perform and that’s my first job to do. It’s all about what you can do and want to do and each year is the same. Each press conference someone tells you to ask me about transfers during the window.

“Yes, we have limited options and these things and we have players with contracts who just aren’t available. If they were it would be a different situation.”

He added: “If we bring in players we can’t have them all on the Premier League or Champions League list. Our squad is not too small.

“We have to strengthen but is now the right moment? I can’t see it because of the situation we are in and I think I know exactly how the situation is and that’s it pretty much.

“I can’t change the answer every week because the situation doesn’t change.”
