Lionesses are handed a HUGE boost ahead of next month’s Women’s World Cup – as clubs allow their players to join Sarina Wiegman’s training camp four days before initial agreed date

  • New agreement means Lionesses will be able to begin training camp on June 19
  • Sarina Wiegman had made her frustrations clear at her squad announcement
  • Lionesses final game in the UK before tournament is against Portugal on July 1

England’s World Cup hopes have been given a major boost after a club v country row threatened to disrupt their preparations.

The Lionesses will be able to begin their camp on June 19, four days earlier than the previously agreed date between FIFA and the European Club Association of June 23rd.

Clubs had been reluctant to release their players as early as June 19 due to concerns over a lack of rest both before and after the tournament.

England boss Sarina Wiegman had made her frustrations clear at her squad announcement last week and had suggested her team would not be able to play a warm-up game before they flew to Australia if players did not report for duty on June 19.

But after a series of talks with clubs, Wiegman has got her wish and a friendly with Portugal at Stadium MK has been confirmed for July 1.

An FA spokesperson said: ‘We are grateful for the mutual understanding of the clubs, as we have collectively worked towards a solution with the wellbeing of players at the heart.

‘All parties recognise we are not only preparing them to be fresh and fit for the intensity of a World Cup, but that a thorough preparation phase, including vital downtime with family and friends, will also benefit the players after the finals.

‘We look forward to welcoming them to St. George’s Park when they return from a well-earned rest.

‘In the meantime, it is important the whole game comes together to address and solve the wider issues of the fixture calendar.’

Tickets for the Lionesses game against Portugal at Stadium MK will go on general sale at 12pm on Monday.
