Michael Jordan ‘is in talks to sell majority stake of Hornets’ to minority owner Gabe Plotkin and Hawks co-owner Rick Schnall, putting an end to his DISAPPOINTING 13-year tenure

Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan is engaged in serious talks to sell a majority stake in the franchise to a group led by Hornets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Jordan is said to be in talks to sell the stake in the team to a group led by Hornets minority owner Gabe Plotkin and Atlanta Hawks minority owner Rick Schnall.

Selling a majority share of the Hornets would mark the end of Jordan’s 13-year run as owner. He paid $275 million for a majority stake in the franchise in 2019.

If a sale is completed Jordan is expected to remain with the team as a minority owner.

Jordan is considered by many to be the greatest NBA player in the sport’s history and has been the only black majority owner in the league.

The success Jordan enjoyed over six NBA championships and five MVP awards has failed to translate into success as an owner. Charlotte has been one of the league’s worst performing teams throughout his time in charge.

After a frustrating stint as the Washington Wizards Director of Basketball Operations, and a brief, forgettable comeback with the team, Jordan bought a minority stake of the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006. By 2010, he would purchase the majority stake from media mogul Bob Johnson, and in 2015, he would rename the team the ‘Hornets,’ after the previous NBA franchise that inhabited Charlotte.

But outside of the name change, Jordan’s tenure as Hornets owner has been anything but memorable.

Charlotte has enjoyed just three winning seasons and only two playoff berths since Jordan became majority owner. And while the team boasts a promising young talent in LaMelo Ball, his current season has been ended early due to a fractured ankle.

If there is a light at the end of the tunnel, it’s French teenager Victor Wembanyama, a basketball prodigy who happens to stand anywhere from 7-foot-2 to 7-foot-5, depending on whom you ask.

Given the Hornets’ status as one of the worst teams in the NBA this season, Charlotte could have as high as a 14-percent change of winning the NBA Draft Lottery on May 16 for the right to draft Wembanyama in June.
