A Qatari consortium interested in buying Manchester United are confident of winning the race, talkSPORT understands.

The group of private investors with links to the Qatar Royal family are preparing an offer before Friday’s ‘soft’ deadline.

The consortium are separate from Qatar Sports Investments, who own Paris Saint-Germain, although Nasser al-Khelaifi, president of the French club, is expected to be consulted.

The Qataris are bullish that their bid will top anything put on the table by rival groups, including British businessman and United fan Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

It has the support of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar, who is also said to be a United supporter.

The Emir is keen for Qatar to cash-in on the success of last year’s first ever Middle Eastern World Cup by investing in a Premier League team.

It was initially expected that the Qatari bid would be for a small stake in the Old Trafford giants but an offer to complete a full takeover now looks more likely.

The Glazer family, who have owned United since 2005, announced in November they were willing to sell all or at least part of the club.

The Raine Group, who are handling any potential offers, are also expecting offers from Saudi Arabia and the USA.

Interested parties have until 10pm on Friday to submit a one-paragraph offer accompanied by proof of funds, although any late bids will be taken into consideration.

United have been valued at a whopping £6billion by the Glazers.

The Americans have been in control of the club since Malcolm Glazer purchased a controlling stake in May 2005.

Any takeover from a Qatari consortium would need Premier League approval and may face opposition in some quarters, given concerns over the country’s human rights record.

Should it be approved, fans will be dreaming of world class players making the move to the Theatre of Dreams.
