Fans were in high spirits on Tuesday evening as Scotland prepared to take on England in their special heritage friendly at Hampden Park.

The friendly in Glasgow marks international football’s 150-year anniversary, with Scotland and England’s clash in 1872 recognised by FIFA as the oldest ever official match between two national teams.

Both Scottish and English supporters arrived in droves to celebrate the anniversary in style on Tuesday, as fans of all ages were seen enjoying the pre-match build-up outside the stadium.

Scotland and England have shared a long-term rivalry in football, and home supporters are confident their side can upset Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions having won their last five matches.

Both sides head into the friendly having played their fifth Euro 2024 qualifier last weekend.

Kyle Walker scored his first international goal during England’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine on Saturday, while Scotland cruised to a 3-0 victory against Cyprus on Friday to keep their nine-point lead over Spain at the top of Group A.

Scotland and England played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw during their last meeting at Euro 2020, in a result that was identical to the first ever clash between the two sides in 1872.

Southgate named a strong side ahead of the clash with Scotland, opting against a rest for Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, but chose to hand opportunities to back-up goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and Kalvin Phillips, who has only played for six minutes at Manchester City this season.

In total, the Three Lions boss made six changes to the side that drew with Ukraine, giving Ramsdale, Phillips, Lewis Dunk, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Kieran Trippier an opportunity from the start.

Meanwhile, Steve Clarke rewarded those who impressed on Friday by naming an unchanged starting line-up at Hampden Park.
