Stomach-churning moment you missed from Cameron Smith after Sunday night’s Origin as Andrew Johns quizzes him on icky habit: ‘Those ears clean, mate?’

  • Smith was caught out thoroughly picking his ear on the post-match Origin show
  • Fellow commentator Johns took great delight in pointing it out
  • It came as NSW thrashed Queensland by 32 points in the do-or-die clash

There were some wild scenes in the Queensland and NSW dressing rooms after the latter won State of Origin game two by 32 points – including Maroons great Cameron Smith mining for gold in his ear before inspecting the findings.

Channel Nine cdommentators James Bracey, Smith, Andrew Johns and Phil Gould were dissecting Queensland’s loss when the broadcast cut to footage of Smith in the Maroons dressing room in the minutes prior.

The former Storm star was talking to fellow coaches Billy Slater, Johnathan Thurston and captain Daly Cherry-Evans before he reached deep into his ear to pull out some wax.

Not content with just finding some, Smith then inspected what he’d found – and fortunately, he didn’t eat it.

Fellow commentator Johns was clearly amused by seeing Smith get caught in the act.

‘Those ears clean, mate? You’re really cleaning those ears there,’ he laughed.

The commentating panel moved on very swiftly from the footage, though the ever-cheeky Johns could still be heard giggling to himself.

It was a tough night for Smith, who is also on the Queensland coaching team under former Storm teammate Billy Slater.

Smith said after the game the Maroon were taking the 44-12 thrashing pretty hard.

‘They are very disappointed in the dressing sheds, first off, Brace (James Bracey). I think from the very first kick off or tackle, you could see the intent NSW had tonight,’ he said.

‘They had to come here and play their best football to keep the series alive, and I don’t think we responded all that well to the way that they played tonight. And they were a little bit down.’

Gould asked Smith if there was any sign of the implosion that was to come before the match.

‘Well, if there was any sort of issues, Gus, it wasn’t glaring. You know, maybe there were a couple of small signs during the week, but when we were over here in Western Australia, they trained with great intensity,’ Smith said.

‘You know, their concentration levels were great. It just – in those small moments, I think NSW were much more desperate tonight and they wanted those small moments more.’

Smith, Slater, Johnathan Thurston and the rest of the Queensland coaching staff and players will be up against it to turn the momentum around in the series-deciding game three.

In their favour is the fact it will be played on home turf, at what is sure to be a packed Suncorp Stadium on July 13.
