Sydney Swans lose forward Isaac Heeney to injury and ‘just went to sleep’ as Essendon pile on five unanswered goals in close contest at the MCG

  • The Swans lead by four points at halftime in their clash with Essendon at the ‘G
  • They had to weather a five-goal storm from the Bombers who surged back
  • Swans forward Isaac Heeney copped a high shot and a suspected quad injury
  • There is plenty to play for, with spots in the AFL top eight extremely close

The Sydney Swans have taken a four-point lead into halftime of their AFL clash but they have plenty of worries with a forward on the bench and the Bombers closing fast.

The Swans were blitzing Essendon early at the MCG until the young Bombers player sparked to life with a five goal unanswered run, especially Sam Durham who kicked the goal that sparked the Essendon revival.

‘It changed on the back of a half from young Durham who was able to go back and arrest some of that momentum,’ former St Kilda great and commentator Nick Riewoldt said.

‘At that stage Sydney were completely dominating the game, they were moving it at will, they were getting the scoreboard, the Bombers couldn’t move it and then it just changed on the back of [Durham’s goal].’

Former Collingwood champion player and coach Nathan Buckley also praised the young Bombers.

‘I think it is great for Bombers fans to see the young blokes have driven it,’ he said.

‘That little run, it was finished by the younger players but through the middle they just continue to find the ball.

‘They dominated uncontested possessions, they dominated field position and then they were able to finish.

‘Sydney just went to sleep.’

There is concern for Isaac Heeney as well, with the Swans forward taken high and then hooked from the field. The official word from the Swans camp is that he is nursing a quad injury, but he could also face a head injury assessment before he is allowed to return.
