Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher agree Kevin De Bruyne would make their all-time Premier League XIs – as Micah Richards hails Man City star for being able ‘to make something out nothing’ after dismantling RB Leipzig

Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher have both said that Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne would make their all-time Premier League XIs.

De Bruyne put on a stunning display as City thrashed RB Leipzig 7-0 (8-1) to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

He rounded off his eye-catching performance with a brilliant late strike, well and truly announcing that he is back to his best after what has been somewhat of a difficult patch.

Speaking after the game Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher were suitably impressed with Belgian and agreed that he is one of the best England has seen.

‘Would he make your starting XI of the Prem?’ Henry asked Carragher.

‘All-time Premier League XI I think Kevin De Bruyne would be in it, yeah,’ replied Carragher.  ‘Me too,’ Henry concurred.

Fellow pundit Micah Richards added that the difference with De Bruyne is that ‘when he’s on it, he can make something out of nothing’.

De Bruyne has long been regarded as one of, if not the best, midfielders in the world, and has starred in Pep Guardiola’s Man City side that has become one of the world’s best.

He has been named in the Premier League Team of the Season in four of the last five campaigns and also lifted the trophy the same amount of times in that period.

The 31-year-old also finished third in the most recent Ballon d’Or, having enjoyed a fruitful 2022 that saw him lift the Premier League trophy, scoring 19 goals and giving 14 assists in all competitions.

In total he has contributed 61 goals and 98 assists in 235 appearances in the English top flight, helping his side win 163 of those games.

But he has not had a straightforward return to club action after the World Cup in Qatar, and Guardiola had called on his star midfielder to get back to basics amid a slight dip in form, and Rio Ferdinand believes he responded in the best way possible.

He said while discussing De Bruyne’s performance on BT Sport: ‘Even the best players need a little jolt from the manager, sometimes you do need that conversation and nudge.

‘The best players don’t sulk and [they] go “right, you know what I’m up for that challenge.”

‘You know when you’re not playing well, but sometimes you need a jolt to the reason and the manager says this is what you need to do and you go in fresh in your mind. All of a sudden the shackles are off.’

Former City defender Nedum Onuoha echoed Ferdinand’s assessment of De Bruyne on the night, while also branding his late strike ‘the cherry on top of the cake’.

‘KDB wasn’t too bad was he,’ Onuoha added. ‘He was spectacular.

‘People have been critical but he was very direct today. The goal was the cherry on top of the cake and was a deserved reward. Making good decisions and good plays, that’s an unbelievable finish.’
