David De Gea Save Penalty vs West Ham

Manchester United beat West Ham 2-1 thanks to a last minute penalty save from David De Gea.

United, whose away unbeaten run in the league now stretches to 30 games, fell behind through a deflected Said Benrahma effort before Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equaliser before the break.

Jesse Lingard, who was excellent on loan at West Ham last season, atoned for his costly Champions League error by coming off the bench to score a stunning winner in the 89th minute.

The drama didn’t stop there though, as after United thought they should have had a penalty at one end when Kurt Zouma brought down Ronaldo, the Hammers were awarded one at the other after Andriy Yarmolenko’s cross struck Luke Shaw’s arm.

Somewhat controversially, David Moyes chose to make a substitute just before the penalty was to be taken, bringing on club-captain Mark Noble specifically to take the spot-kick.

Noble’s first touch of the ball was the penalty, and his effort was saved by De Gea, who guessed correctly in diving to his left.

The result means Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s side remain unbeaten and are now level with Liverpool at the top of the table, while West Ham are in eighth after suffering their first loss of the campaign.

According to Infogol’s expected goals (xG) model, a United win was a fair reflection of the chances created in the match, with the xG total finishing: WHU 1.67 – 2.16 MUN.

United limited their hosts to just 0.87 non-penalty xG, showing a decent defensive display, while Cristiano Ronaldo was on the end of everything good United did in attack, with the Portuguese star taking 76% of United’s xG total (1.65).

Jesse Lingard marked his return to the London Stadium with the winner as David de Gea saved Mark Noble’s stoppage time penalty to earn Manchester United a dramatic 2-1 win over West Ham.

Lingard, who excelled on loan with the Hammers during the second half, fired home on 89 minutes after Cristiano Ronaldo had cancelled out Said Benrahma’s deflected opener, and appeared to have sewn up the three points.

However, Luke Shaw’s handball gave the hosts a late chance to earn a share of the spoils but Noble – brought on specifically to take the kick – saw his effort pushed away by De Gea.

Minute 95: NOBLE COMES ON… AND MISSES THE PENALTY!

Late late drama as Luke Shaw handles in the box and VAR intervenes to award the spot kick.

Veteran and captain Mark Noble comes on solely to take the kick… but it’s saved by De Gea!!

Minute 89: LINGARD SCORES A SCREAMER!

After his error against Young Boys, Lingard comes off the bench to score what looks to be the winner… against the side he did so well for last season on loan. A screamer of a strike, which flies beyond Fabianski.

Minute 78: Ronaldo wants a penalty

Ronaldo cuts inside Coufal and goes down. But the referee isn’t interested, nor is VAR. There appeared to be contact, albeit minimal.

Minute 75: Wishful effort from Fernandes

Fernandes has a go from 30 yards out while running with the ball, but it fails to trouble Fabianski who stoops to gather it.

Minute 72: Double change for United

Pogba and Greenwood go off, and are replaced by Lingard and Sancho.

Minute 47: Fabianski denies Ronaldo!

Fernandes plays Ronaldo in on goal, but Fabianski makes a fine save on the stretch to deny him.

HALF TIME

An eventful first half at the London Stadium, as both sides are playing open and attacking football. Benrahama opened the scoring with a deflected strike off of Varane, before Ronaldo bagged a leveller shortly after from close range.

Minute 42: Vlasic blasts over

Cresswell fizzes the ball into the box and debutant Vlasic makes a good connection but it goes well over the bar. It wasn’t an easy chance for the Croatian.

Minute 35: RONALDO LEVELS!

It didn’t take long. Fernandes chips it in to Ronaldo who heads on goal. Fabianski saves but it rebounds back into the path of the No.7 who taps it home.

Minute 30: BENRAHAMA SCORES!

Bowen lays it off to Benrahama on the edge of the box who has space to strike. It takes a huge deflection off Varane and past De Gea before nestling in the net.

Minute 27: Fernandes hits the post!

Bruno Fernandes strikes the ball crisply on the half volley but a great fingertip save by Fabianski onto the post denies the Portuguese.

Minute 22: Bowen denied by De Gea

Some nervy moments for United. Bowen cuts inside McTominay and strikes on goal, but De Gea saves with his feet.

Minute 15: Maguire error almost proves costly

Maguire makes a mistake near his own area which leads to Bowen having an effort towards goal, but it is deflected away from danger.
