Kate Middleton and Prince William, both 40, stepped out in Scarborough on Thursday for a royal walkabout. One lucky royal fan got to meet the Princess of Wales, however he broke royal protocol when he reached across the barrier and put his arm around Kate.

The man approached Kate and managed to get her attention before asking to take a photo together where he put his arm around her. After chatting for a bit Kate followed suit and put her arm around his shoulders.

There are no official royal rules forbidding public displays of affection, but the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip set a precedent encouraging royals to keep touching to a minimum.

Prince William and Kate have usually followed in the late Queen’s footsteps, keeping things strictly professional in public, however, the Princess fell short of this rule on Thursday.

However, there is a royal protocol against having selfies with fans, which the Princess definitely broke on her royal outing on Thursday. We know this is a rule, because when Meghan Markle, 41, began dating Prince Harry, she was overheard admitting that she was not allowed to take a selfie with a fan.

The Duchess of Sussex, in line with royal protocol, told one couple in December 2017: “We’re not allowed to do selfies,” according to the Daily Mirror.

Prince Harry, 38, once told a group of his young admirers in 2015 that “selfies are bad”. The Duke of Sussex, who was visiting The Australian War Memorial, in Canberra, Australia, at the time, stopped to pose for photos, shake hands and fulfil his royal duties.

When asked for a selfie, Harry responded: “No, I hate selfies. Seriously, you need to get out of it,” he said to a fan. “I know you’re young, but selfies are bad. Just take normal photographs.”

But this is a rule that royals sometimes do not always adhere to. Younger royals, in recent years, have repeatedly engaged more with well-wishers and this is likely to become more common with King Charles now head of the Royal Family.

DON’T MISS:

There have been various occasions where Kate has felt compelled to break protocol and get close to well-wishers and some of them have been captured by photographers.

Following the Queen’s death on September 8, the Royal Family spent a lot of time visiting areas that meant a lot to Her Majesty. During this time Kate was photographed hugging a well-wisher who had visited to pay their respects.

In addition, on Thursday’s outing, as Kate met members of the public, the mother-of-three encountered a minor mishap when her shoe got caught in the muddy grass.

Kate was able to keep her shoe firmly on her foot, and she was seen walking away with a smile on her face after the incident.

The Princess of Wales has encountered mishaps with her footwear before, as back in 2013 at a St. Patrick’s Day parade event at Mons Barracks Aldershot, her heel got stuck in a grate.

Kate had to steady herself on her husband’s shoulder as she freed herself, before continuing on with the royal visit.

The royal couple travelled up to Scarborough to show their support to two organisations that are supporting the mental health of young people.

The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales and Yorkshire-based organisation, the Two Ridings Community Foundation, have joined forces to generate an impressive pool of funding.

During their visit, the royal couple met with local organisations The Street and The Rainbow Centre before distributing £345,000 of funding via a grant panel of the Two Ridings Community Foundation.

The panel included young people who have themselves been supported by local community organisations, helping to ensure that the money goes straight to the services that have the greatest impact.

The funding will be used to boost the provision of safe spaces, affordable sports and outdoor activities, youth work, creative workshops and mentoring.

Kate looked stylish as always, wearing a sumptuous beige overcoat from Max and Co. layered over a belted turtleneck beige knitted dress featuring long sleeves and a figure-skimming fit from Gabriela Hearst.
