Reddit BANS 2,000 communities including r/The_Donald after major change to content policies

  • Reddit has banned 2,000 subreddits after changes to its hate speech policy
  • Banned communities include r/The_Donald and a popular left-wing subreddit
  • The bans represent a significant sea change at Reddit

Reddit has banned thousands of communities after a significant change to its policies around hate speech.

Among the communities being blacklisted are major subreddits like r/The_Donald which acted as a hub for fans and supporters of US President, Donald Trump.

‘The community has consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average (Rule 1), antagonized us and other communities (Rules 2 and 8), and its mods have refused to meet our most basic expectations,’ Huffman said.

In addition to r/The_Donald, Reddit has also banned a left-wing subreddit named after a podcast called r/ChapTrapHouse.

According to The Verge, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman elaborated on the company’s new hate speech policy in a call with reporters, saying:

‘Reddit’s mission is to bring community and belonging to everybody in the world, and there is speech in the world and on Reddit that prevents other people from doing so,’ Huffman told reporters.

Reddit banned more than 2,000 communities for promoting hate speech, including:

‘Harassing speech or hateful speech prevents people from coming to Reddit and feeling safe and sharing their vulnerabilities … So if we have speech on Reddit that’s preventing people from using Reddit the way that we intend it to be used, or that prevents us from achieving our mission, then it’s actually a very easy decision.’

The move to ban so many communities outright is a formative shift for Reddit, a platform that has often allowed controversial and sometimes toxic content to exist in its user-moderated communities.

The platform has had recent and notable shifts in its board makeup, recently naming Michael Seibel, CEO of Y Combinator as its new CEO.

Previously, Reddit has also made several major changes to its policies on specific types of content this year, including some pertaining to political advertising.

Earlier this year, the platform made political advertising campaigns publicly viewable on a new subreddit called r/RedditPoliticalAds.

In addition to the amount of money spent, the listings also detail how many impressions the ad made and also where it’s being targeted.

The new transparency subreddit will also come with new guidelines for political advertisers running campaigns on the site.
