Racka Racka’s clash between Cookie Monster and the Power Rangers is obviously a low-budget parody crafted with love for abject silly chaos, but it also kind of references an old running bit from “Sesame Street” called the “Super Mega Morphin Monsters,” which is itself a parody of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” The adorable fever dream sees Elmo, Zoe, Telly, and Rosita become superheroes — just like the Power Rangers. Elmo becomes Elmosaurus, Zoe becomes Zoeceratops, Telly becomes Telly Dactyl, and Rosita becomes Rosita Raptor. No, they do not transform to resemble dinosaurs, but they don cute matching outfits while a copyright-safe version of the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” electric guitar riff plays.
Instead of fighting crime, the Super Mega Morphin Monsters fight bad behavior. One such instance sees the foursome teach a pair of young Muppets to share their toy truck because sharing leads to more fun than bickering. And their methods, unlike Cookie Monster’s, do not involve dismemberment. Turns out, talking does the trick just fine. So maybe the big blue doofus should just ask nicely next time. Or perhaps we should embrace Cookie Monster’s violent tendencies, considering how “Sesame Street” is darker than everyone thinks.
