Ti West’s indie slasher Pearl was one of the most acclaimed films of 2022, even earning praise from Martin Scorsese himself.
But the movie, starring English actress Mia Goth, won’t hit Australian shores until six months after its U.S. release.
Pearl will finally arrive in Aussie cinemas on March 16, and on March 17 in the UK.

There has been widespread backlash over the delayed release on social media, with moviegoers complaining for months about the lengthy delay.
‘I already bought the Blu-ray and watched it. Bring your movies to Australia sooner!’ tweeted one.
‘Honesty thought this was never going to come out, glad you are bringing it to cinemas,’ added another.

‘Pearl finally comes out in Australia on March 16th…. LITERALLY 6 MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE THIS IS BULLS**T (I had to watch it illegally),’ said one horror fan, while another tweeted: ‘LOL I saw this maybe six months ago??’
The delay has received similar backlash in the UK, where British cinephiles and critics have been raging on social media for months.
‘Pearl’s UK release date is still nearly two months away and I just think that’s crazy,’ one tweeted.
‘Maybe UK cinema-going wouldn’t be in the state it is in if we got big releases like this closer to their U.S. release date, rather than six months later where all buzz has died and no one cares anymore (or has seen it already via other means),’ added another.
Pearl is the prequel to last year’s horror hit X, which starred Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega and grossed more than $15million on a $1million budget.

It serves as an origin story for the title character, whose aspiration to become a movie star led her to commit violent acts on her family’s Texas homestead in 1918.

Praising the picture, Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese told Slash Film: ‘Ti West’s movies have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, powered by a pure, undiluted love for cinema.
‘I was enthralled, then disturbed, then so unsettled that I had trouble getting to sleep. But I couldn’t stop watching.’

There was also huge backlash last month when Goth was snubbed for a Best Actress Oscar nomination, despite having one of the most acclaimed performances of 2022.
Addressing the snub on Jake’s Takes, the 29-year-old said: ‘I think that it’s very political. It’s not entirely based on the quality of a project per se.
‘There’s a lot going on there and a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to nominations. Maybe I shouldn’t say that, but I think that’s true. I think a lot of people know that.
‘A change is necessary. A shift should take place if they wanted to engage with the wider public. I think it would be of benefit, really, [to nominate horror movies].’
