CBS Super Bowl

Super Bowl LVIII is less one week away! As the Chiefs and 49ers descend upon Las Vegas for the NFL Championship, CBS is taking things to the next level with its record 22nd television broadcast.

The Paramount-owned company will break ground with some new technologies while rolling out an insane number of cameras all across the field. Every inch of Allegiant Stadium will be covered. Even the goal posts!

CBS announced that it will deploy 165 total cameras between the traditional CBS broadcast, Nickelodeon’s alternate telecast, and THE NFL TODAY. It will also mark the first time that CBS Sports will present the Super Bowl in 1080p HDR and 4K HDR.

As for the latter, there will be 48 cameras with super slow-motion capability, including 24 4K zoom extraction cameras. That is a record number for a broadcast of this nature, and will provide unique angles from the ceiling, goal lines, and inside the pylons, among others. The 4K zoom will provide the best-possible look at replays during the most critical moments of the most important game.

“Doink” cameras are another new addition to how things are going to look on television. For the first time ever, cameras will be inserted inside of the uprights, with six 4K cameras set up to capture unseen angles of field goals and extra points!

23 augmented reality cameras will also provide a unique element to the broadcast. 11 cameras will be used for CBS. Eight will be used for Nickelodeon. Four will be used at the set on the Strip.

This gives each different portion of the Super Bowl broadcasts to include a collection of AR graphic enhancements. For example, the slime cannons on Nick.

Those are the most prominent announcements from CBS.

In total, it will look something like this:

  • 156 total cameras
  • 24 cameras with 4K zoom extraction capability
  • 6 “doink” cameras embedded inside the uprights
  • 24 robotic cameras
  • 23 augmented reality cameras
  • 5 skycams / flycams
  • 3 drones
  • 5 depth-of-field cameras
  • 6 sets
  • 49 replay machines
  • 600+ record/playback channels
  • 19 television mobile units

Paramount is going huge for their historic Super Bowl broadcast! Let’s hope that the game is a good product.
