The family of late Australian celebrity chef Bill Granger are still undecided on a key detail about his memorial service, reports claim.

The world-renowned restaurateur died of cancer on Christmas Day in London at the age of 54.

He was farewelled by his wife Natalie and daughters Bunny, Ines and Edie at a private funeral in the UK shortly after, but there is the question of whether a memorial service will take place in his homeland of Australia.

According to the Daily Telegraph Granger’s family, who have lived in the UK for a decade, are in discussions about ‘a fitting local send-off’ in Sydney – the city that made him famous.

While Granger was born in Melbourne, the self-taught cook’s restaurant empire was born in Sydney when he established his first ‘Bills’ restaurant in Sydney’s Darlinghurst in 1992.

Bill then went on to own an 18 cafe-strong empire with restaurants around the world including in Japan, Hawaii and London.

The chef was credited with inventing a breakfast staple that has come to define a generation – the humble avocado on toast.

Bill authored 14 cookbooks, made five TV series and most recently was honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia in January 2023.

He will be remembered as the ‘King of Breakfast’, for making unpretentious food into something special filled with sunshine and for spurring the growth of Australian informal and communal eating around the world.

Granger’s death was announced by his family in a heartbreaking Instagram post.

‘He will be deeply missed by all, with his loss most profoundly felt by his adored family, who are grateful for all the love and support that has been given,’ it read.

‘It is with great sadness that the family of Bill Granger announce he has passed away on 25th December at the age of 54.’

‘A dedicated husband and father, Bill died peacefully in hospital with his wife Natalie Elliott and three daughters, Edie, Inès and Bunny, at his bedside in their adopted home of London.’
