Taylor Kinney is taking a leave of absence from Chicago Fire.

A source confirmed to Deadline on Friday that the actor, 41, will be taking a break from the NBC drama series to deal with a ‘personal matter.’

The fan favorite – who was previously engaged to Lady Gaga – has played Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Kelly Severide since the show’s debut in 2012.

He is one of the few main cast members that appear on every episode and NBC has not yet reported on how he will be written out of the show for the indefinite future.

The Vampire Diaries vet has been nominated three times for a People’s Choice Award and won in 2015 for his role on the ongoing series.

In the past, he also appeared on 11 episodes of the Chicago Fire spin-off series titled Chicago P.D. that debuted in 2014.

The series ended in 2020.

Finally, there was another spin-off series from 2017 titled Chicago Justice in which he only appeared in one episode.

In 2021, his costar Jesse Spencer exited the show but inevitably returned for season 10 finale.

Derek Haas, the television writer of the series, also announced in November that he would be leaving the franchise and Wolf Entertainment after 10 years.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Haas said in a statement: ‘Although I am leaving Wolf Entertainment next year to focus on creating new shows, I’m entirely committed to delivering amazing episodes of Chicago Fire and FBI: International through the end of the current seasons.’

He added: ‘I learned everything I know about storytelling, pace, characters, production values, and hiring the best cast, crews, and staffs from Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski.

‘And as hard as it is to leave a place you love and have called home for over a decade, including incredible support from Universal Television, NBC, and CBS, I look forward to building my own brand in entertainment,’ he continued.
