Understanding Artificial Intellect in the Workplace | Jobs & Robots

A look at “Understanding Artificial Intellect in the Workplace” To begin with, let’s ask ourselves the question. Since when has mankind known ideas about robots? Are autonomous devices capable of performing useful work? Generally speaking, the simplest mechanical devices have been known to different civilizations at different times since ancient times. Today technologies are everywhere.

We can also find the idea that such structures can, under certain conditions, come to life. And even have intelligence in many sources. However, they almost always refer to magical operations where the reasonableness of an artificial structure is ensured by the action of higher forces.

Historical Notes

For the first time, we find ideas about functioning autonomous mechanisms operating only due to the internal structure among the ancient Greeks. That is not surprising, since the Greeks knew quite complex mechanisms. They were mostly used for entertainment purposes. So today, you can gamble and test your luck by joining a real online casino.

But there were also those that did useful work. The only example of the latter that has come to us is the Antikythera mechanism. But apparently, it was not something unique for its time. So, having before their eyes examples of complex mechanisms and having developed abstract thinking, the Greeks, of course, came to the idea of the possibility of robotization in a completely modern sense. Although the most obvious robot-like construction of ancient Greek mythology is the bronze knight Talos, it should be noted that this is rather an example of a magical mechanism: it was revived by the blood of the gods poured inside.

A purer example is the wheeled tripods of Hephaestus, which could, at his behest, go to other gods and return back. We find their description in the Iliad. It essentially makes it the first science fiction work known to us. To describe such mechanisms, Homer used the word automaton. It is also in the masculine gender automatic from which the modern automaton originated.

Another example of robotic mechanisms in Greek mythology is the golden dogs of Alcinous, king of the Phaeacians, given to him by Hephaestus to guard the palace. We find their description in the Odyssey.

It is also worth adding that we find a very accurate description of a humanoid robot in another ancient Chinese culture. The Taoist treatise Lezi describes a mechanical model of a person made of artificial components. It repeats the human anatomy, which was capable of performing various elements of an entertaining performance in response to the operator’s touch on different parts of the body. Nevertheless, in this example and several others omitted here for brevity, it is clear that the principle of the hypothetical operation of robotic mechanisms was also clear to the ancient Chinese.

Understanding Artificial Intellect in the Workplace | Love, Death, And ChatGPT

Over the past year and a half since the publication of the last part of the cycle, significant changes have taken place in the world of AI. The most striking examples of these are the ChatGPT chatbot and the Midjourney neural network for generating images. All this again made the question of the possibility of creating general artificial intelligence. Moreover, general-purpose robots based on algorithms of this kind are relevant again.

It must be said right away that no general AI is yet visible here. We are still talking about a narrow artificial intelligence capable of performing a specific task. It is based on the results of training on a super-large sample of data. Although the achieved quality of performance is certainly impressive. It may, in the foreseeable future, deprive some of the representatives of creative professions of work.

With a general-purpose robot, the question is somewhat more complicated. At first glance, it seems that a chatbot is able to repeat meaningful language constructs after a person. It also can obtain the desired result based on them. Nothing prevents him from teaching him to repeat actions in the physical world according to the same principle.

So? The cost of a mistake is fundamentally different. A poorly chosen word or a sixth finger painted on a portrait look like funny blunders that are easily corrected by subsequent editing. The mistake of a robot in the physical world can cost a nearby person his life. The sixth finger here can take the form of an extra movement with a kitchen knife while cooking. And the robot will not even understand what happened and will calmly continue to cook dinner.

It is for this reason that narrow AI, no matter how advanced, is not enough to create a general-purpose robot in the physical world. The constant assessment and reassessment of the current situation are no less important than the ability to perform a specific set of actions.

But it already turns out to be enough for a convincing imitation of a romantic relationship, which only says how little a person needs to be deceived.
