Murphey went into cardiac arrest shortly after and died a few hours later. The defense claims that the error was caused by systemic issues at Vanderbilt.

Assistant District Attorney Debbie Housel highlighted in her opening remarks that Vaught should have called the pharmacy and not overridden Vanderbilt’s prescription dispensing system, among other things.

Vanderbilt University’s electronic systems were not interacting with each other, according to defense attorney Peter Strianse.

During the first day of testimony, Vaught was visibly upset.

Murphey’s daughter-in-law testified, and an audiotape of her interview with a TBI agent was played in front of the court for more than an hour.

During the first day’s audio recording, Vaught stated that she was distracted while getting the drug.
