Nonetheless, Dewani’s defense requested that the trial be dismissed, and Judge Jeanette Traverso agreed that there were just too many discrepancies and that all evidence fell way below the bar of reasonable doubt to allow for a fair trial.

Anni Dewani’s family is undeterred in their pursuit of justice. Mr. Dewani was held under the Mental Health Act on April 20th at the medium-security Fromeside Clinic in Bristol.

A three-day extradition hearing begins in Belmarsh Magistrates’ Court a fortnight later. A witness told Hugo Keith QC, who represents the South African authorities, that Mr. Dewani stated he “needed a way out” of his marriage.

Mr. Dewani would not be abused in a South African prison, according to the court.

Shrien Dewani is accused of conspiring to kidnap, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, abduction, and impeding the administration of justice, among other charges.

All five counts were dismissed when he entered a not guilty plea. The trial of Dewani began on October 6, 2014.

The primary witnesses who implicated Dewani’s participation, Zola Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, and Monde Mbolombo, contradicted their prior testimonies and each other on most of the essential parts of the “murder for hire” scenario during cross-questioning.

Tongo and Mbolombo were discovered to have made up phone calls and texts that did not exist, and Tongo and Mbolombo refused to name a fifth conspirator mentioned in the recordings.

Qwabe failed to explain why Anni was driven into a residential neighborhood before the court.
