Officer Loren Courts died while performing his duties on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

Loren was fatally shot in the area of Joy Road and Marlowe Street. His shooter was Ehmani Mack Davis, 19, who the Detroit officers killed following a shootout.

According to the Detroit Police, Courts and his team were ambushed on the city’s westside. They received a call at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday about gunfire in the area.

After a few minutes, Courts and his partner, Amanda Hudgens, had arrived at the location. They approached the place with their tactics, but shooters ambushed them. The shooters fired at the officers injuring Courts while backup officers were trying to provide cover.

Courts fought until the end. However, he was already critically injured. He collapsed onto the ground and received help from Hudgens.

The gunman walked out of the apartment, and police continued to cover the Courts. Hudgens was finally able to strike the target, killing the gunman. The officers fought bravely to handle the chaotic situation.

Who Was Loren Courts?

Loren Courts was a veteran cop. He followed in his father’s footsteps and had been serving the Detroit police department for the last five years.

The officer primarily worked in the 2nd Precinct Special Operations Cease Fire Unit. He went to Redford High School and was a member of the class of 1999. Courts was the 231st Detroit Police officer killed in the line of duty since 1985.

The Michigan State ordered to lower the flags to half-staff to honor the Court’s contribution to society. The flags return to the entire staff on July 19, 2022.

Kristine also says Courts loved his job at the Police Department. She said that the only reason he was employed at the time of the shooting was that he had agreed to work a double shift.

Courts is the son of a retired Detroit police officer who worked in the department for thirty-two years. He has four siblings in his family.
