Dr. Vicky Conway, an academic and well-known police reform critic, has died.

The Dublin City University (DCU) School of Law issued a statement on Twitter, saying, “We are profoundly sad to have to share the loss of our colleague Vicky Conway.”

“We shall miss her since she was a beautiful person, smart and compassionate.”

Dr. Conway joined DCU’s School of Law and Governance in July 2015, having previously worked at the Universities of Kent, Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Limerick, and Leeds.

She was promoted to Associate Professor of Law in 2017 and was appointed as the School’s first Convenor of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Students at DCU paid tribute to their mentor, who taught a range of criminal law, criminology, and police courses while also holding visiting scholar positions in North America, Australia, and Ireland.

“This is heartbreaking news,” one user tweeted. It was a devastating loss for all of us. “May she find peace.”

Similarly, Immunology Professor Christine Loscher stated, “This is really startling and sad news.” Vicky was widely regarded and respected by her DCU colleagues and friends.

Dr. Conway has previously served on the Policing Authority, which oversees the Garda, as well as the Commission on the Future of Policing.

She was a major policing researcher in Ireland, focusing on the nexus of societal transformation, police culture, and police accountability.

In 2020, she launched an innovative podcast called Policed in Ireland (@policedpodcast), which provides a platform for people to share their experiences of being policed in Ireland.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris paid homage to Vicky. He stated: “The passing of Dr. Vicky Conway has grieved An Garda Sochána.

“Dr. Conway contributed significantly to police in Ireland and the United Kingdom through her academic research, publications, and lectures. As well as her involvement in the Policing Authority and the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland.

“Vicky’s enthusiasm for human rights-focused policing shone through in all of her interactions with me and my Garda colleagues. She was a staunch supporter of vulnerable people of society and minority cultures.”
