Who Was Timothy Fehring?
Timothy Fehring was a Melbourne teen who died in 2019 during a school excursion. He was born on August 2, 2003, to Barbara and Phillip (Dale) Fhering in Malvern, Victoria.
He was one of two kids; his sister Emma was six years older than him. His family lives in Ringwood North. Tim (referred to in his family) began Year 7 at Blackburn High School in 2017.
He had traveled to Europe on a school trip in June 2019 while studying German in Year 9 as part of the Blackburn High School Biennial International Cultural Tour. As soon as the team reached Berlin, he started vomiting, which Ms. Taylor, the school’s Business Manager, said was caused by spicy food during the flight, as mentioned in Coroner’s report.
On the second day of the trip, he threw up twice, but the teachers who had gone with him thought he may have been homesick. Tim had lost appetite and had stopped eating, but he was advised to stay hydrated.
After his health went downhill the following day, he asked his mother if he wanted to return home. But, his parents also thought that he may have been homesick. Later, his mother asked the staff to take him to the hospital since he was not getting well despite taking several medicines.
Even the hospital doctor said that his constipation and homesickness were partly responsible for his condition. After four days of stay in Berlin, the group traveled to Austria.
After reaching there, Tim’s parents consented to him returning home as an unaccompanied minor since his health had deteriorated. However, when the staff was preparing to send him home, his condition worsened, and he was taken to the hospital.
However, the doctors could not save him, and he died on July 28, 2019.

Coroner reports said that Timothy Fehring died of Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathy. He had lost five kg during his brief stay in Europe, frequently puked, had trouble eating, felt tired, and found it difficult to walk.

Coroner Simon McGregor said the staff had “made the wrong judgment” in treating Tim. His family also said that he was a happy and healthy child. He was excited about the trip.

Timothy Fehring’s family is still devastated by his death. He died during a Europe tour from his school. They said that they think the staff made wrong medical decisions for Tim since they kept saying he was unwell because of homesickness.
But, Tim’s mother, Barbara, hopes they will take extra care next time, and things will change regarding the student’s health and safety.
