- The clip resurfaced on social media causing widespread criticism.
In 2004, Oprah Winfrey interviewed Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on her show, and this interview has recently come back into the spotlight, drawing considerable criticism.
During the conversation, Oprah brought up rumors about Mary-Kate’s health, particularly concerning an eating disorder.
At the time, the twins were just 17 years old and seemed uneasy when Oprah inquired about their clothing size, a question that felt especially sensitive given the surrounding rumors.

Oprah started by recognizing the rumors, saying,
“I know a new rumor [that has] recently surfaced has really upset you, right? You know, the one about eating.”
Ashley attempted to minimize the effect of these rumors, stating,
“Yeah, you know people are going to write what they’re going to write. We try not to read the good or the bad because it just comes with the territory. Either you’re too fat, too skinny, and people are just gonna write what they–”
But before Ashley could finish, Oprah interjected with, “What size are you, by the way?” This question clearly made both twins uncomfortable.

They mentioned that they were petite and didn’t know their exact clothing size. Oprah’s remark,
“Oh, that’s so interesting! I’m obsessed with size, and you’re like, ‘I really don’t know!'”
elicited laughter from the audience, but it has since been criticized as insensitive and tone-deaf. Just a few months later, Mary-Kate entered a rehabilitation facility to seek treatment for anorexia, a serious condition marked by extreme calorie restriction and body image issues.
The revival of this interview has underscored how societal views on body image and eating disorders have changed, with many now considering such inquiries inappropriate and potentially damaging.
