Dozens of passengers had to stand on the wing of an American Airlines plane at Denver International Airport while evacuating the aircraft after one of its engines caught fire Thursday evening.

The flight, American Airlines 1006, was a Boeing 737-800 traveling from Colorado Springs to Dallas-Fort Worth, carrying 172 passengers and six crew members. It was redirected to Denver around 5 p.m. local time after the crew noticed “engine vibrations,” according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to the FAA, after landing and while taxiing to the gate, one of the engines ignited. An investigation is currently taking place by the FAA.

Before landing, the pilot had informed air traffic controllers in Denver about the engine issues, clarifying that it wasn’t an emergency, as noted in audio from LiveATC.net. The controller asked, “10006, just to confirm, not an emergency still, right?” The pilot responded, “Ah, just have high engine, so we are cruising slower than usual.”

Things took a turn just a few minutes later after the aircraft had landed, as someone on the radio urgently exclaimed, “Day, day, day! Day! … engine fire!” A spokesperson for Denver International Airport mentioned that the plane reached gate C38.

The fire was put out, and all passengers were safely evacuated. Photos from the scene show many passengers exiting the aircraft and standing on the wing while smoke filled the area. The Denver Fire Department reported that twelve passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

In a statement, American Airlines thanked their crew members, the Denver team, and first responders for their quick and effective actions, emphasizing the safety of everyone onboard and on the ground. They are sending a replacement aircraft and crew to Denver to help passengers continue their journey to Dallas.
