A weekend of violence in a North Carolina port town has left three people dead and five injured after a gunman opened fire from a boat in what authorities call a “highly premeditated” attack.
The suspect, a decorated former Marine, is now in custody and faces multiple murder charges, while the community grapples with the shock.

Nigel Max Edge’s Personal Life and Family
Public records and court documents show that Nigel Max Edge was previously married to Rachel Crowl. Their divorce was finalized in 2009, and Crowl has said that she has not spoken to her ex-husband in about ten years.
After the shooting, she shared her sorrow for the victims’ families and believes the tragedy could have been avoided if Edge had received help for his mental health. There is no indication in available records that the suspect has any children.
A Decorated Veteran’s Descent into Paranoia
Nigel Max Edge, 40, is a former Marine sergeant who served from 2003 to 2009, with two deployments to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His military service was decorated; he received a Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon, and several other awards. Recently, however, his life took a troubling turn.
He changed his name from Sean William Debevoise in 2023 and began filing a series of strange, disorganized lawsuits. These lawsuits included claims against a medical center and a church, accusing them of conspiring against him as part of a plot by “LGBTQ White Supremacists” because he is a straight man.

A Premeditated Attack from the Water
The shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2025, at the American Fish Company, a popular bar and restaurant on the water in Southport. According to police, Edge acted alone, maneuvering his white center-console boat on the waterway near the bar before opening fire with a short-barrel AR-style rifle equipped with a suppressor.
The bar was full of patrons, many of whom were vacationers enjoying live music when the gunfire rang out. After the attack, Edge escaped down the Intracoastal Waterway.
Legal Repercussions and Ongoing Investigation
Edge was captured about 30 minutes after the shooting when a U.S. Coast Guard crew saw him loading his boat at a public ramp in Oak Island.
He faces three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. District Attorney Jon David has indicated that more charges may follow and that his office will consider pursuing the death penalty in this case. Edge is being held without bond.
The Suspect’s Bizarre Link to a Celebrity
A curious detail from Edge’s past shows that he once had a brief connection to country music singer and “American Idol” star Kellie Pickler. In 2012, when he was known as Sean Debevoise, he attended the CMT Music Awards with Pickler in his Marine uniform.
Over a decade later, in 2023, Edge filed a lawsuit against Pickler, claiming she had tried to poison him that night. Legal experts dismissed the lawsuit as baseless.
